The 1998/99 season was the 25th season of the I-divisioona , the second highest Finnish ice hockey division . The six best-placed teams qualified for the SM liiga relegation , in which the Pelicans Lahti achieved promotion. Jää-Kotkat Uusikaupunki was relegated to the third division.

In the main round, each of the twelve teams played a total of 48 games. The six best-placed teams qualified for the SM liiga relegation. The last two placed had to compete in the relegation to avoid relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
