The IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship (in German IWGP (International Wrestling Grand Prix) Junior Heavyweight Championship ) is a wrestling title for individual wrestlers at New Japan Pro Wrestling . The title has the status of a world championship, as it was also defended in the USA and is officially subject to a weight limit of 100 kg (equivalent to 220 American pounds). As is common in wrestling, the award is based on a previously determined storyline .
history
The title was introduced to honor wrestlers in the lower weight class or younger wrestlers. It was introduced on February 6, 1986. To determine a title holder, a tournament was held at the NJPW New Year Dash 1986 show in Tokyo , which was won by Shiro Koshinaka. He defeated The Cobra in the final to become the first IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion.
On December 27, 1995, the title received the status of a world championship, as he was defended by Koji Kanemoto in World Championship Wrestling in the United States. He defeated Alex Wright in the match . In addition, the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship was part of the so-called Super J Crown, a collection of several titles, especially for lighter or technically better wrestlers, which were brought together on August 5, 1996 during the reign of The Great Sasuke, as this one tournament with eight contestants, each holding a title, won. These also included the British Commonwealth Junior Heavyweight Championship, the NWA World Welterweight Championship, the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship, the UWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship, the WAR International Junior Heavyweight Championship, the WWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship and the WWF Light Heavyweight Championship . After the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment ) regained control of their Light Heavyweight Championship in November 1997, the Super J broke up and the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship has been fought alone since then.
Title holder
The current title holder is Hiromu Takahashi in his third reign. He defeated previous title holder Will Ospreay on January 4, 2020 on the first day of Wrestle Kingdom 14 in Tokyo .
