action

The depressed nursing assistant Ruth Kimke suffers from her living conditions and the ruthless behavior of many people. When she was broken into and the police remained largely inactive, she went on a search for clues herself. She is supported by her martial, but actually harmless and kind-hearted neighbor Tony. Ruth soon notices a change in herself. Her detective work on the trail of the burglar and his backers finally gives her life a new meaning. But Ruth soon realizes that she and Tony may have taken over the case, because they are dealing with a group of completely shabby and unscrupulous violent criminals.

Reviews

The film has so far won over 89 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . Peter Debruge of Variety says that Macon Blair has impressive control over the direction, but especially over the pace and atmosphere of the film. In addition, the sound design contributed by his younger siblings Will and Brooke Blair and the film music with its deep synthesizer sounds accentuated the film precisely. The film, according to Debruge, uses a mood that is reminiscent of films by the Coen brothers and snakes somewhere between a slowly developing tension and an absurd humor.

Matt Patches of Thrillist noticed Blair was not the first-person narrative amateur detective trying at one, but he is likely to be the first such only with cursing about octogenarians, ninja stars , Google -Montagen, tons of big-Red- Cobbled together cans, toilet seats, friendly raccoons, exploding body parts and the idiocy of humanity.

Luise Checchin from the Süddeutsche Zeitung thinks that from the moment Ruth and Tony meet the gang of burglars, the film will take a turn and from then on it will chase through the genres like it has become wild, from the black, humorous gangster clothes to the bloodthirsty splatter strips to the horror film including the wobbly camera - Chase through the forests of Oregon. Checchin explains that it seems as if the darkness that was fermenting in the depressed Ruth stepped out from then on, but the film does not claim that much depth, rather it simply describes a rebellion against an untenable state with the means of the absurd and speaks of a self-empowerment story .
