I Gega d'Schwiiz ( “I against Switzerland” ) is a solo album by the Swiss dialect - rapper Gimma from Chur . The album was on 24 February 2006 on the music label released Nation Music. It is the rapper's first release to enter the Swiss charts. Three years after its publication, I Gega d'Schwiiz received gold status .

background

Gian-Marco Schmid, the rapper's official citizen name, began his career as a member of the Oschtblock Kuabuaba , but soon went solo without leaving the group. After his first two albums Droga, Sex, Violence is, Rap and Wiissa waste , including through the SUISA , indexes were published Gimma the low-budget album Mis Leba ish so shit . In the following the musician toyed with the idea of ending his career before he met a production manager of the Nation Music label while visiting the VIVA-Comet , which had already successfully promoted Swiss hip-hop artists such as Bligg and Luut & Tüütli . Nation Music promised the rapper a professional album release and was able to convince him to continue his career.

In the run-up to the release, Gimma was asked several times about the indexed albums, and whether the upcoming album might not be in danger of being indexed. The rapper denied with the words: “This is not banned. There are so famous people on it, such famous producers, that it just has to be on the market. We spent too much money on it to be banned. There are outrageous statements again, but it is not forbidden. ”The musician also suspected that the publication would make it into the top 20 of the Swiss charts and that it would even climb into the top ten after the appearance of two music videos.

Emergence

Most of the tracks on the album were created in collaboration with the music and hip-hop producer Sad in the “Obe im Eggä” studio. Superschwiizer , Drogasexgwaltrap Part 2 and Üseri Kinder were accepted by Scrooge in "Om Research", Iisziit and Ai letschti Rundi by Flo Schär. The songs were mixed and mastered by Dan Suter. For Gimma, I Gega d'Schwiiz was the first album that was produced with professionalism.

“There are no more separate beats on the album, that's fundamental. It was my first time recording in a professional environment, which I have never done before, I was always in the studio with my colleagues. For the first time, I had a management team that looked after everything. ... The album will come across as brutally professional, which is very unusual for me. "

Songs and lyrics

On I gega d'Schwiiz several songs are included which deal with issues such as despair, loss, future or death. In Üseri Kinder, for example, Gimma illustrates the misery of numerous children on earth and philosophizes as to whether conditions would not get worse in the future. Iisziit and Du bisch weg address the loss of loved ones .

Other titles are exclusively for entertainment or contain aggressive and anti-competitive texts, called battle rap . In Superstar , Gimma makes fun of talented cast show participants . The play Superschwiizer is also well-known , in which the rapper takes up the cliché of the Swiss by portraying himself in exaggerated form as a patriotic mountain farmer attached to the country . The song begins with the lines: “Oh! Born in the cowshed on straw, dressed in yodelling costume and off you go! In the traditional shirt the pride of the clan, with a happy yodel on your lips! "

In addition to Drogasexgwaltrap Part 2 , Killer and Dr Typ can also be counted among the Battle Rap pieces . In the title Boom , Gimma and the three guest rappers describe a bloody attack on a city, where they portray themselves as the assassins. Farmer's party can be included in the party songs section.

Production and music

The main producer of Gimma's breakthrough album was Sad , a hip-hop musician and producer from Bern, who also recorded the album. He contributed the background music to twelve songs on the album. Claud , who is the producer of the group Kuchikäschtli , was also involved as a music producer on the album. He is responsible for the pieces Iisziit and Ai letschti Chance . Yvan Jaquemet, a former member of the French-speaking Swiss rap band Double Pact , produced Superschwiizer . Most recently, Üseri Kinder was created by D-Digital.

Philly Hansen played a guitar for the songs Angscht , Du bisch now weg and Im Kreis . The instrument is also used in Iisziit , but was operated by Flo Schär. In Weni mol tot bin the instrumental is reinforced by the Fender Rhodes instrument . It was recorded by M. Basci. The DJ of the Kuchikäschtli section, Stimpee Kutz, was involved in Killer , where he manipulated records, known as scratching . The backing vocal for Dr Typ comes from C. Schütz, the human beatbox in Ai letschti Chance from Haris.

Guest musician

Six guest musicians are represented on a total of four titles on I Gega d'Schwiiz . For Drogasexgwaltrap Part 2 , Gimma worked with the well-known German rapper Sido . The Berliner initially suggested a mutual love song to Gimma, "but that was too much for him". So the title was realized as a battle rap song. Sido later commented positively on the collaboration with the Swiss: "I don't understand his dialect texts, but he hits the wall, is a real street dog."

The guest musicians on the title Boom are the rapper Baze, who is friends with Gimma, as well as Orange and Ali de Bengali, members of the Oschtblock Kuabuaba. Rich Fonje is represented by the Brothertunes group at Summer . The song Liabi und Hass, which is not on the official track list, is a collaboration with the band Breitbild.

Success and reception

I Gega d'Schwiiz was Gimma's first publication to be classified in the charts and on March 12, 2006, it entered the Swiss album charts at number 13. The album stayed in the top hundred for 29 weeks before being ranked 89th on September 24th. On April 8, 2007, I Gega d'Schwiiz was able to return to the charts and ranked 98th for a week.

On July 31, 2009, Nation Music announced that I Gega d'Schwiiz had been awarded the gold record for more than 15,000 units sold.

On the Music.ch website, I Gega d'Schwiiz was rated four out of six points by the editors. The site's readers gave the album an average rating of three points. There is also a review on the site that describes the release as "an album beyond political correctness and decency" . Also will I gega d'Schwiiz called musical audio biography. "The whole biography of the Chur rapper - including drugs, brawls and admission to a psychiatric clinic - was communicated offensively, according to the motto: Hey, watch out now, there is someone here who has really experienced something, who knows something to tell!"

The Hitparade.ch site also criticized the album positively.

“'I Gega d'Schwiiz' is probably the most authentic and blunt dialect rap release in Switzerland! With its direct texts, GIMMA shoots far beyond the horizon of the small checkered Hip Hop thinker and actually lets loose a satire on our country. Profound songs like 'Angscht', 'Summer' or 'Iisziit' seem like short fiction films, while with 'Superstar' and 'Cazzoman' he couldn't better bring the stupidity and loneliness of our society to mind. That nobody has to fool him in terms of rap technique, he clarifies quite casually and in a dewy manner with tracks such as B. 'Killer' or 'Dr Type'! [...] In his opinion, the most likeable Swiss is the "super Swiss" who can make fun of his country and himself. Accordingly, in this song, which can also be seen and heard as the first video track / radio single, typical Swiss clichés are picked up and made fun of. And only 'Ai Letschti Chance' is pure soul trip and maybe one of his most honest songs ever. [...] Such an album has and will not be released again anytime soon ... "

Two of the songs on the album were made as music videos . These are Super Swiss and Iiscite . The clip for Superschwiizer was shot by Marco Lutz and consists of only one camera shot . The cameraman moves backwards in front of the rapper, who is crossing a snow-covered mountain village in the three-minute video. Gimma wears a blue shirt and a red New Era hat. The members of Breitbild and the Kuchikäschtli section also appear in the clip. In 2006, Superschwiizer was the second most played video of the year on VIVA Switzerland .

The video Iisziit was also made by Marco Lutz and is also mostly set in the snowy mountain area. Further scenes take place in a cemetery . A previous story to Iisziit can be heard on the album Panzer with Dr Summer . In a special version of the Iiszit video, the song can be heard with the instrumental by Dr Summer in front and the lyrics by Iisziit .

With Hymna Gimma was able to contribute the official World Cup song to the 2006 World Cup . The single of the song also contains Iisziit as a second track . The sound carrier reached number 6 in the single charts.

The cover shows a full body shot of Gimma. The rapper wears the same clothes as in the music video Superschwiizer ; a blue traditional shirt and a red New Era cap with the NY logo. He stands up to his ankles in the snow, a snow-covered mountain range can be seen in the background. Gimma holds his right hand in his pocket, with the left he presents the middle finger. Drawn trees from which people sprout in various activities, various animals, but also cars and buildings have been inserted on the left and right edges of the picture. Behind the white Gimma lettering at the top of the picture, another drawn mountain range is visible.

The booklet of the album consists of ten folded pages on which the lyrics to Superschwiizer , Ai letschti Chance , Angscht and Iisziit are shown. It also contains drawings similar to the cover and some photos of the rapper in a snowy landscape.

The artwork was designed by Michi "MM75" Lüthi, as was the case with the Churer's other publications, the photos were taken by Gian-Marco Castelberg.
