Man si -

Mensch si is the eighth solo album by the Bündner rapper Gimma . It was released on January 28, 2011.

History of origin

After the album Hippie was released in 2009 , which was very poppy in contrast to the rapper's previous albums , Gimma released the solo album Unmensch in May 2010 . With this album, Gimma returned to the style of his previous works with aggressive and provocative lyrics. However, when it was released, he announced that he was working on a larger project and gave the fall of 2010 as the time period for the album. Work on Mensch si began even before Unmensch was published . For the first time a live band was used. However, the album was postponed indefinitely at the end of August. In October 2010 a new version of the title Buurabüabli was released , which Gimma recorded together with the singer Kisha . In addition, a video was released, which was underlaid with scenes from the cartoon Heidi . The song appeared in November on the Swiss music sampler Schweizer Hits Reloaded . At the end of December, the guest contributions, the album title and the album cover became known. A week before the album was released, the song Lönd mi aifach si was also released.

Most recently, Gimma recorded the song USA with the Grisons hip-hop band Breitbild , with whom he has already worked several times.

production

The album was released in the U3 studio by the Bern rock band Züri West from the Swiss music producer Sad, who started the songs Auga us Glas , Get the Future! , Haigoh, Juno , Lönd mi aifach si , Usa , UT and Mora stömmer re uf produced, recorded. Claud produced the songs Nur für mi , Milliönär and Äscha zu Äscha . Oliver Hitz added a beat to the single Mensch si , while Sad took over the direction. Drummer Gert Stäuble from Züri West was also responsible for the drums, while Roger Massimo played the guitar in the song, which was also used in Äscha at Äscha . In addition, a string orchestra was recorded for the title song. At Lönd mi aifach si , the chorus was sung by the Chur singer Nyna Cantieni.

Texts

In contrast to Gimma's other solo albums, Mensch si was very questioning, personal and serious. According to Gimma, the album was thematically linked to the album Iiszit , which Gimma released in 2008 together with Claud from the Kuchikäschtli section under the name Bucher & Schmid . The title Just for mi tells the love for a person from the perspective of a rapist. The style of the text is similar to the pathos . Mensch si deals with the topic of getting older . That's how Gimma sings that he doesn't want to wait until death. According to Gimma, the working time on the song was around two years. In Haigoh, Juno , the Chur man puts himself in the position of a newborn and tells from his perspective. A short rap performance by Thom Luz can be heard in the Skit Drunk . UT is the abbreviation for unsuitable and very socially critical . In it, Gimma expresses, among other things, his displeasure with the system and politics . In Millionär , the rapper faces fictional scenarios and their consequences. So he wondered whether being a millionaire would also be an end. The last title Mora stömmer gegen uf describes the stagnation and the recurring cycle of life. In the first verse, he tells how you unconsciously and drunk you meet your new partner in the house of your ex-girlfriend. In the second stanza he sings about his funeral .

The cover is completely black and white . It shows a portrait of Gimma. He is wearing a black wool hat. His eyes cannot be seen because the word Mensch si was placed over them with the features and producers. The lettering is surrounded by a black bar.

reception

Chart success

Mensch si positioned itself on February 13th in the first week of the chart at number 6 on the Swiss charts . This classification, together with Panzer (2007; also 6th place), represented the highest chart entry in Gimma's career. In the following weeks the LP reached places 14, 21, 19, 34, 44, 52 and 86 before it left the Top 100 . In total, the album spent eight weeks in the album charts.

criticism

The internet platform laut.de rated Mensch si with three out of a possible five stars. Editor Fabian Merlo particularly praised the introspective to self-tearing, angry, critical and also oppressive song texts that create images and above all vocalize the described emotions . However, the productions that were too well-behaved and smoothly ironed in Merlo's opinion as well as the poppy refrains , which are too much geared towards the masses, had a negative impact. He also drew a comparison to the album D'Party isch vrbi by the Bernese rapper Baze .
