Unmensch is a solo album by the Swiss rapper Gimma , which was released on May 14, 2010 via the music label EquipeMusic . It is the seventh full album and the rapper's fourth commercial release. Unmensch was largely produced by hip-hop musicians Shuko and Sad .

Background and idea

Gian-Marco Schmid, as the rapper's real name is called, was best known for his hard and provocative lyrics at the time of his first songs, which were developed on primitive equipment. Some of his publications have even been banned by SUISA . Gimma's breakthrough came in 2006 with the album I Gega d'Schwiiz . In the following year, Panzer appeared , which made it into the top 10 of the Swiss album charts.

In 2008, the rapper decided not to release a solo album. Instead he carried out several projects with the oschtblock Kuabuaba , such as the album America is Back . In addition, he worked for a certain time with the music producer Claud , with the album Iisziit was released, which is characterized by calm and melancholy songs with sentimental lyrics.

In 2009 Hippie was released. The relatively harmless text and the use of stylistic elements from pop music prompted much criticism from fandom and later even of Gimma itself. On the album monster wanted the rapper " return to its roots " and consciously re-insert hard texts to stand out from hippie to distance. Behind the album is "the desire to apologize for" hippie "" . Also, people shouldn't get the impression that Gimma is " the new Baschi ".

Emergence

Unmensch was originally planned as an EP . This should contain songs that musically and lyrically would not have suited hippie . When more songs were created during the preparations through a “motivational boost”, Gimma added the work to a full album.

In advance of the release, Gimma published the titles of 29 songs on Facebook , which formed the raw material for the album, and let the fans choose their favorites for the finished album.

The album was recorded by Lou Geniuz in the g'cookin studio in Chur and Sad in Bern . Then the songs by Jan Stehle were mixed in the studio mamma in Münchenbuchsee . The last development process, the mastering , was carried out by Oli Bösch in the Livingroom Studio in Bern. According to the rapper, the costs for Unmensch only covered a third of the budget. Muve Recordings is responsible for the distribution of the CD, management and booking are carried out by Pleasure Productions .

Texts

As with previous publications, Gimma uses very direct language, lots of cursed expressions and obscene words on Unmensch . Battle rap is used in several titles , in which the rapper verbally attacks haters and envious people. Other songs express Gimma's disinterest in the media and criticism or intentionally portray the musician extremely positively. The more melancholy pieces include I warta and Vice Ex-Miss Switzerland , the latter being the model and former Vice- Miss Switzerland Xenia Tchoumitcheva , a good friend of Gimmas , is dedicated.

The song title Besti wos je hätz gitz does not correspond to the Swiss German term for the best that ever existed. It is a mispronounced version of the actual translation. In a party report by Telebasel , several participants were asked for their opinion on the event, an immigrant subconsciously pronouncing the words that way. The phrase quickly became known nationwide and is now very popular among young people. The original excerpt from the report is used as a scratch for the chorus of the piece .

The hidden track at the end of the album is a 9-minute remix by Alpha Beta , which includes Kutti MC and Gerard MC.

Production and music

The main producer of Unmensch is the German Shuko . He created the background music for the titles Morgarot , Besti wos je hätz gitz , Unmensch , Megaphon and I am nid schuld , and he was also involved as a co-producer on the play Vice-Ex Miss Switzerland . Sad is responsible for the musical production of the songs Vampir , I warta and Cazzoman's drive by fucking . 7inch worked with Shuko for the title Vice-Ex Miss Switzerland , Gunna did the same for Brutal . Max Miles also produced the two tracks DWS Part 1 and 2. Alpha Beta is by Boobrez Beats and Antihelda by Yvan. The last time Gimma produced the QRCT 7000 itself.

For the song I warta one was Guitar of Roger Massimo recorded. In Unmensch , the instrument was made by Simon Schneider. Nico Nkozuscheck was involved in the same title as a keyboard player .

PhD songs

In the run-up to the album release , the title Megaphon was published for free on the Internet. Furthermore, the song Morgarot could be heard on the official MySpace page Gimmas even before Unmensch was released . In April it was briefly announced that four titles would be made available free of charge, provided that 2000 people announced themselves as Gimma fans on Facebook . The action was withdrawn.

Videos

The title song Unmensch was realized as a music video as the first song . The clip was shot by Rafael Bolliger in Bern. The camera was on a helmet that the rapper was wearing, so the entire video is shown from Gimma's point of view. In the clip, Gimma moves through Bern as a monster and commits various crimes and follies. He steals in the supermarket, steals various vehicles, instigates brawls, burns down a gas station, scratches a parked car, throws people into the Aare and finally messes with a street gang. At the end of the video, the gang members put him on the Kirchenfeldbrücke .

trip

At monster no concert tour was organized. Instead, Gimma only performed one live performance at Openair Frauenfeld 2010, which was also the record baptism. In the interview, the rapper explained: “… I'm just not that motivated to give concerts at the moment. It's not my favorite thing to do. But the show on Sunday morning, as the first act I've played several times and I think it's great! There are always the most broken of the broken audience in front of the stage - but a great atmosphere. [...] But there will be a tour in autumn - I promise! "

reception

success

Unmensch entered the Swiss album charts on May 30, 2010 at number 13 and thus achieved the same classification as the breakthrough album I Gega d'Schwiiz . In the following time the album fell back to positions 31, 43 and 71, before it left the charts after four weeks. Inmensch could not build on the sales success of earlier Gimmas rap albums.

criticism

The album was positively received by the critics. These attribute Gimma above all solid skills with hard and aggressive lyrics and a successful comeback in the hip-hop world.

“The comeback of what is probably the most controversial Swiss rapper and the associated return to the old“ shit on it ”attitude can definitely be described as successful. No matter what you think of Gimma as a person and his regular appearances in the tabloid press, musically and as an entertainer, he is able to entertain with monster, connect with the times of I Gimma or Panzer, and thus with the megaphone on his lips from then on May 14th recapture his place in the rap game. "

“« Unmensch »continues where it left off in 2007 with« Panzer ». The rapeseed are slaps in the face, because here people cursed, provoked and handed out. GIMMA with the devilish laugh shows Switzerland the finger. What was previously noted by the soul doctor as a behavioral abnormality of a contradicting personality is now breaking through again, his anger at the external circumstances. [...] GIMMA does not continue where otherwise successful rappers give the audience sugar by pouring pop into rape. No, GIMMA takes its fellow musicians SHUKO, YAN and SAD into the dark forest and rages wildly. There is a lot of shadow and one or the other listener is probably going too far between all the acoustic pain and the anger. In the time of the upcoming open airs with mud and eroticism, GIMMA's «monster» will have the masses under control again. "

The cover shows Gimma with a black hoodie in the right part of the picture. The boundaries between the sweater and the dark background are partly no longer recognizable. The rapper wipes his face with his left hand, the hand and face are dirty and smeared with blood. In the left part of the picture you can see a wall of paper torn to the right with a target. As with Panzer , a modified warning notice with the inscription Gimma is recommended for ages 18+ has been placed in the lower left corner. The Gimma lettering and the album title are kept in white and show red discoloration that is reminiscent of blood. The font is also shown on the back cover and in the booklet.

The eight-page folding booklet contains the credits for the individual songs, a note of thanks, a "Greetings from Hell" and the credits for the album. Photos show the rapper in a vaulted cellar, writing on the walls with a piece of coal. A metal hockey mask also appears several times.

Michi "MM75" Lüthi is responsible for the graphics and the artwork. The photos were shot by Eveline Frey and Janosh Abel. The make- up artist comes from Gaby Proyer.
