Ignatius Anthony Catanello

Ignatius Anthony Catanello (born July 23, 1938 in Brooklyn , New York City , † March 11, 2013 in Queens Village, Queens , New York City) was auxiliary bishop in Brooklyn .

Life

Ignatius Catanello studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at St. Francis College in Brooklyn and the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington . He was ordained a priest on May 28, 1966 through Bryan McEntegart , Bishop of Brooklyn . He has served as a pastor in St. Rita Parish , Long Island City , St. Helen , Howard Beach , St. Ann , Flushing, and Our Lady of Angels , Bay Ridge . After earning a master 's degree in theology from St. John's University (New York) , he received a doctorate in religious education from New York University . Catanello was a professor of theology at St. John's University for 27 years . He was long-time President of the Diocesan Senate of Priests and the Priests' Council of New York . In 1988 he became Vicar General of Queens . In 1991 he became rector of Elmhurst Cathedral Preparatory Seminary .

Pope John Paul II named him Titular Bishop of Deultum and Auxiliary Bishop in Brooklyn on June 28, 1994 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Bishop of Brooklyn, Thomas Vose Daily , on August 22, 1994 in the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help , Brooklyn; Co-consecrators were Joseph Michael Sullivan , Auxiliary Bishop in Brooklyn and René Arnold Valero , Auxiliary Bishop in Brooklyn. His episcopal motto was regnum Dei intra vos est (Lk 17:21).

Catanello chaired the Diocesan Commission for Ecumenism for ten years . He was committed to the interreligious dialogue between Christians and Muslims in the eastern United States.

On September 20, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. to resign for health reasons. From 1989 to 2011 he also served as a pastor in the Holy Family Parish in Flushing, New York.
