Ikarie XB 1 is a Czechoslovak science fiction film from 1963, which was shot in black and white by the Barrandov film studios . The film premiere in the GDR was on October 25, 1963, while the film was first shown on West German television by ARD on February 14, 1981. The film is based on the novel Gast im Weltraum (in the original Obłok Magellana ( The Magellanic Cloud ), 1955) by Stanisław Lem , who is not named in the credits.

action

In the year 2163 a research spaceship embarks on a long journey from Earth to a planet with Earth-like properties located in the Alpha Centauri star system 4.3 light-years away . The Ikarie XB 1 almost reaches the speed of light, which means that a little more than two years pass due to the time dilation for travelers, but 15 years on Earth. The international crew has to struggle with psychological problems in the confines of the spaceship as well as with external dangers. An earthly spaceship with a dead crew from the 20th century is discovered that is radioactively contaminated. Two crew members of the Ikarie XB 1 are killed while exploring it due to the explosion of old nuclear warheads . The flight past a dark star that emits life-threatening radiation almost means the end of the mission. Finally, the researchers reach the Earth-like planet, on which apparently a civilization comparable to that of Earth exists.

Reviews

"A technically simple science fiction film that is primarily interested in the psychological and social problems of the people on board."

IKARIE XB 1 is undoubtedly a remarkable work in its own right. By avoiding space clichés ... Polak makes a really mature and agile film. Here the SF is not used - as usual - as a pretext for an unfounded trick show, but as a situation in which psychological and social problems can be explored ... The excellent buildings by Zazvorka contribute at least as much to the success of the film as they do Camera work ...

Trivia

The interior of the spaceship prop was used in 1963 for the children's film Clown Ferdinand and the Rocket , which was also shot by Polák.
