action

Mathilde, traumatized by the death of her son in a previous relationship , and Thomas have an unfulfilled desire to have children. Without Mathilde's knowledge, the doctor Thomas turns to the genetic engineering scientist Professor Cardoze, who implants Mathilde her own clone . The birth and first years of the daughter, baptized “Manon”, proceeded normally, apart from many check-ups with Professor Cardoze.

Increasingly, however, Manon shows strange behavior, for example she knows things from Mathilde's life that she cannot know under normal circumstances. She also stands by her parents' bed several times, seemingly sleepwalking , while they are having sex. Thomas hides the truth from the two, but is on the verge of revealing the secret several times. Cardoze manages to keep Thomas from confessing again and again. While the relationship between Mathilde and Manon was strongly characterized by close togetherness in the first few years, Manon developed increasingly aggressive behavior towards Mathilde. After all, it goes so far that she openly competes and advertises for Thomas.

Thomas' trust in Cardoze is now finally gone. At Thomas' urging, Cardoze grants him a look at Manon's patient file. It says that her cells are degenerating and, despite her young age, she only has a few months to live. In the showdown, Manon finally tries to drown the drugged Mathilde in the same well in which Mathilde's first son died, but loses his balance and drowns himself when trying to drag her into it.

background

The production costs that EuropaCorp had to bear amounted to an estimated 7.8 million euros . The shooting period was from July 8th to October 11th, 2002. The film had its world premiere in May 2004 in France. On October 30, 2004 it was screened at a festival of French-language films in Singapore , and on November 25, 2005 it was screened at a similar festival in the Czech Republic .

Leading actress Nastassja Kinski was deeply moved by the plot: “The story speaks for itself. [...] Nothing and nobody should interfere with nature. The connection between mother and child is something very profound. "

Christopher Lambert had big problems playing the violent scenes: “If one thing has been difficult to play, it's the violence. I know it seems paradoxical given the number of action films I've made, but then it was cartoon violence, none of that was serious [...]. In the Mirror of Evil , shouts and gestures conflict with those we love most. Such violence is unbearable because it could be real. "

Aruna Villiers was particularly interested in the subject of "cloning", as she is the mother of twins in her private life and experiences two personalities of the same appearance every day.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was an “atmospherically dense psychological thriller as a restrained genre mix”. He was "well played" and "supported by a solid basic tension".
