The number and form of events at this festival can vary from year to year. There are usually between 150 and 200 events. More than 80% of the program items are free of charge for visitors, including events by world-renowned jazz , classical, dance and theater artists. Some festival programs run throughout the year, including educational programs such as the Festival Fellowship Program for disadvantaged youth.

The International Festival of Arts & Ideas was founded in 1996 by Anne Calabresi , Jean M. Handley and Roslyn Meyer as an annual festival in New Haven - a small town with a diverse and solid cultural education offering. It differs from the established art festivals in that it combines concept events. The aim was to bring together world-class artists and outstanding thinkers from around the world to showcase the city and the state as an important place for art.

Public perception

The festival has been increasing in public awareness and popularity since 1996, both nationally and internationally. For example, 174 events took place at the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in 2013, which were attended by 138,985 visitors. 85% of these events were free to the public. This success was the result of significant investment and support from the State of Connecticut, Yale University , the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven (CFGNH), First Niagara Bank, and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), all of which are the festival's main sponsors. It was the most successful festival since it was founded. In this regard, the festival's chairman, Gordon Geballe, said the following:

“We are thankful to sponsors, supporters, and visitors for making this happen. The Festival has always sought to be a lively place for cultural activity and an economic driver for our region, and this year's result goes a long way in proving why we continue to do what we do each June. "

“We are grateful to the sponsors, supporters and visitors who made this possible. The festival should always be a lively place for cultural activities, but also an economic stimulus for our region. This year's result is further proof of why we do what we do every June. "

For an economic study of the Quinnipiac University during were International Festival of Arts & Ideas 2013 revenues of about 34.3 million in dollars generated, an increase of about 37% meant to last year. Visitors to the festival reported spending an average of $ 127.88 on food, retail, accommodation and transportation - 21% more than at the 2012 festival - and an average of 3.7 days at the festival. Furthermore, the visitors visited the festival in groups of at least 2 or more people.

Mary Lou Aleskie, director of the festival, said the following in this regard:

“We continue to find that the festival is an event that draws great crowds of people from around the region who want to stay in Connecticut and spend money here. Visitor spending, combined with the festival's investment in jobs and local services necessary to produce the festival, are generating further revenue for our state. "

“We also feel that the festival is an event that attracts a lot of people from all over the region who want to spend time in Connecticut and spend their money here. The expenses of the visitors combined with the investments of the festival in jobs and local services, which are necessary for the implementation of the festival, create further income for our state. "

Compared to other festivals in the United States, this one attracts more visitors and spending per capita during the 15-day festival period. In this regard, Aleskie said the following:

“We're proud to say that the Festival generally has a greater impact on Connecticut than many other cultural events and festivals that occur nationally. This is partly due to the length of the festival but also, we believe, due to the investments we make in keeping this festival open-access for all visitors while staying deeply engaged with the business community. "

“We're proud to say that the festival generally has a greater impact on Connecticut than many of the other cultural events and festivals held on a national level. This has in part to do with the length of the festival, but we also believe we are making this festival accessible to all while being deeply connected to the business community. "

During the International Festival of Arts & Ideas in 2013, 817 artists and speakers performed, including 696 Americans. Of the artists, 474 people were from Connecticut, with 268 people residing in New Haven.
