Irene Hinrichsen

Irene Hinrichsen (born May 10, 1947 in Hamburg ; † March 1, 2012 in Marseille ) was a German diplomat and most recently consul general in Marseille until her death .

Life

After graduating from high school , Hinrichsen studied German and English at the University of Cologne between 1966 and 1973 and completed this course in 1973 with the First State Examination in Philology before she subsequently worked as a research assistant at the University of Cologne. In 1977 she completed her doctorate at the University of Wuppertal as Dr. phil. with a dissertation on the subject of the novelist as translator: Annemarie and Heinrich Böll's translations of English-language narrative prose. A contribution to the translation criticism.

She then joined the Foreign Service and, after passing the career test, was first employed in the Foreign Office from 1979 to 1981 and then as a cultural advisor at the embassy in Egypt . After her return, she was an advisor in the Political Department of the Foreign Office from 1984 to 1987 and then until 1989 advisor for development cooperation, press and culture at the embassy in Algeria , before she was advisor for culture at the embassy in Chile between 1989 and 1992 . From 1992 to 1996 Irene Hinrichsen was permanent representative of the Consul General in Boston and then from 1996 to 1999 deputy head of division in the Political Department of the Foreign Office.

In October 1999 she was accredited as ambassador to Botswana and thus as successor to Albert Gisy . From August 2002 to July 2005 she was Werner Burkart's successor ambassador in North Macedonia , while Hans-Dietrich von Bothmer was her successor as ambassador in Botswana .

In August 2005 she became ambassador to Zambia . Her successor as ambassador to North Macedonia was the previous Consul General in Izmir , Ralf Andreas Breth . In 2009 she handed over the management of the embassy in Lusaka to Frank Meyke , who was previously ambassador to Bangladesh .

Hinrichsen was last consul general in Marseille and held this position until her death on March 1, 2012.
