Ivan Babikov , born as Iwan Sergejewitsch Babikow ( Russian Иван Сергеевич Бабиков , scientific transliteration Ivan Sergeevič Babikov ) (born July 4, 1980 in Syktywkar , ASSR of Komi ) is a Canadian cross-country skier of Russian origin, who started for Russia until 2007 .
Career
Babikow has lived in Canada since 2003, initially with the help of a sponsor. He made his World Cup debut in December 2005 in Vernon, Canada, in a pursuit race and finished the competition in 14th. Just five days later, he achieved his best ever World Cup result in Canmore over 15 km in free technique with fourth place. Overall, he managed to achieve a top ten result two more times in World Cup competitions. He took part in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin and the 2007 Nordic World Ski Championships in Sapporo for Russia, before receiving Canadian citizenship in December 2007. Until 2008 he still had to start for Russia according to the FIS rules.
In January 2009 he celebrated his greatest success for Canada at the Tour de Ski 2008/09 when he won the final mountain pursuit with the fastest running time. In the overall ranking, however, he did not get past 36th. At the subsequent Nordic World Ski Championships in Liberec , he was part of the Canadian relay, which was able to occupy fifth place. In February 2010 he reached a fifth place in the 30 km double pursuit and an eighth place in the 15 km freestyle at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver .
At the US Open Championships in Fort Kent in March 2010 , he won 50 km mass start races. Only four days later he won the 6 km handicap race at the same place as part of the US Super Tour. The Tour de Ski 2010/11 ended Babikov ranked 21 overall. On March 12, 2011, he achieved a top 10 place in Lahti in eighth place. Shortly before that, Babikov started at the Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo . After finishing 15th in the pursuit, he finished 30th over 15 km.
At the Tour de Ski 2011/12 Babikov finished 27th in the overall ranking after poor stage results. At the Canadian Championships in 2012, he secured the 10 km title. He also won silver over 15 km and bronze over 50 km.
At the beginning of the 2012/13 season he reached 25th place at the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo . At the 2012/13 Tour de Ski he impressed with good stage performances and finished the tour in seventh place. At the Nordic World Ski Championships 2013 in Val di Fiemme , he narrowly missed a medal over 15 km in fourth.
Babikov was subsequently unable to show any consistent performance in the World Cup. Although he remained without major success, he was part of the squad again at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi at the age of 33. However, he remained in the individual disciplines and also with the relay without a top 10 place. The best individual placement was 20th place over 50 km. In the 2014/15 season he took 28th place at the Nordic Opening in Lillehammer and 30th place at the Tour de Ski 2015 . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 in Falun , he came in 23rd place in the skiathlon, in 20th place in the 15 km freestyle and in tenth place with the relay. In March 2015 he became Canadian champion over 15 km. After placing 50 at the Nordic Opening in Ruka at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he finished 29th at the Tour de Ski 2016 and 14th at the Ski Tour Canada .
Babikov lives in Canmore with his wife and son .
