He published his works worldwide under the name Jón Svensson - with the exception of Iceland, where his “last name” (actually patronymic ) remains unchanged “Sveinsson”.

Nonni is a diminutive of the name Jón. Jón Sveinsson was born on the Möðruvellir farm in Hörgárdalur near Akureyri. His parents were Sigríður Jónsdóttir (1826–1910) from Reykjahlíð am Mývatn and Sveinn Þórarinsson (1821–1869), clerk for the bailiff Pétur Havstein, the father of Hannes Hafstein . His parents had eight children, three of whom died of diphtheria in childhood in the autumn of 1860 . Björg (Bogga) (1854–1882), Jón Stefán (Nonni) (1857–1944), Sigríður Guðlaug (1858–1916), Ármann (Manni) (1861–1885) and Friðrik (1864–1943) grew up. His mother brought Kristín (1852–1949) into the marriage. In 1865 the family moved to Akureyri in the Pálshús , named after the first resident. Today it is a museum known as the Nonni House or Nonnahús . Nonni had a happy childhood, but it was clouded by the early death of her father Sveinn Þórarinsson in 1869. In 1870 he left Iceland at the invitation of France . He spent the winter of 1870 in Copenhagen , where he waited for the end of the Franco-Prussian War . In France he was able to attend better schools, for example in Amiens from 1871 . He adopted the Catholic faith, entered the Jesuit order , studied and was finally ordained a priest in Liverpool in 1890 . Since the Reformation in the 16th century, Nonni was the first Icelandic Catholic priest.

Since 1906 he wrote the twelve “Nonni books” about his youth in Iceland and his later life and work in Europe, the USA and Japan in German, most of which were published by Herder . They have been translated into more than 30 languages. Nonni only visited Iceland twice (1894 on horseback and 1930) at the invitation of the Icelandic government to celebrate the millennium of the world's oldest parliament still in existence, the Althing . From 1936 to 1938 he undertook an extensive world tour and lecture tour to the USA , Canada and Japan .

Bench at Nonni's grave on Melaten

Nonni died on October 16, 1944 in the St. Franziskus Hospital in Cologne and was buried in the nearby Melaten cemetery in Cologne , namely in the grave of the Cologne Jesuits (grave site 20 E / 19 D directly on the first main road NS / NordSüd left of Entrance Piusstraße off). In front of the wall with the vital dates of numerous Jesuits, Nonni has his own (lying) plaque.

Commemoration

To the left of the grave in this cemetery, there has been a bench since January 2011 to linger and browse. The text on the sponsor's sign reads: “In memory of Jón Svensson. Donated by NONNI friends, DIG and the Herder publishing house ”. The bank was made possible by donations to the “Kölner Grün Stiftung”, which is committed to improving the cityscape, parks, etc. In Cologne-Ehrenfeld the Nonniweg and the Nonnibrunnen are dedicated to him. In the immediate vicinity is the Nonni Club, an open door for children and young people, which Pastor Hermann-Josef Hieronymi, a great Nonni admirer, started in the 1960s. He also suggested the Nonni fountain.
