Leovegildo Lins da Gama Júnior , called Júnior (born June 29, 1954 ) is a former Brazilian football player and coach .

Life

Júnior played for Flamengo Rio de Janeiro from 1974 to 1984 and 1989 to 1993 . He won four Brazilian championships , the last of which in 1992, and the Copa Libertadores . In 1981 he also won the World Cup with Flamengo by beating Liverpool 3-0 . 1984 to 1987 he played for Torino Calcio , 1987 to 1989 for Pescara Calcio . Júnior is the current record holder with 857 games for Flamengo. In 1992 he was honored with the Bola de Ouro , the annual award for the best player in Brazil.

In the Brazilian national team he played a total of 70 times and took part with the Seleção in the 1982 and 1986 World Championships . At the 1982 World Cup in Spain he was part of the so-called "Dream Team" around Zico and Sócrates , which is still considered the best Brazilian team of all time, alongside the Seleção of 1970. Given the "Fantastic Four" in midfield, which were formed from Zico, Sócrates, Falcão and Toninho Cerezo , the very versatile and creative Júnior played as a left defender. However, he was not a pure defender, but helped build the game. He scored a goal in the sovereign 3-1 intermediate round win against reigning world champions Argentina . Nevertheless, the "Dream Team" was eliminated because it lost 3-2 to Italy in the second game of the intermediate round. The defeat caused fierce controversy in Brazil and ultimately led to a departure from creative offensive football; Although a draw would have been enough, the team continued to play unconditionally to win and lose when the score was 2-2. At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , Júnior played as a dynamic playmaker alongside Sócrates in midfield. Once again, however, the title missed due to a defeat in a classic in World Cup history; this time Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals against France, led by Michel Platini , on penalties.

After retiring from active football, he worked as a coach and TV commentator. Júnior also played beach soccer for a while and was world champion at World Cup tournaments in 1995, 1997, 1999 and 2000 and top scorer several times (1997, 1999 and 2000) and was voted the best player of the tournament every time. He also tried several times as a singer; shortly before the 1982 World Cup, he recorded a song entitled “Voa Canarinho”, which sold 800,000 times.

From Pele , he was included in the list of the 125 greatest living footballers ( FIFA 100 ).
