Jürgen Bornemann

Jürgen Bornemann (born January 25, 1950 in Bad Wildungen ; † June 5, 2019 in Rome ) was a German officer, most recently as Lieutenant General of the Army of the Bundeswehr . In his last assignment, he was Director General of the International Military Staff (IMS) of NATO in Brussels from July 2010 to June 2013 .

Military career

Training and first uses

Bornemann joined the Bundeswehr in 1968 and trained as an officer in the Army Air Defense Force . He was employed as a platoon leader until 1972 . Subsequently, from 1972 to 1976, he was employed as a youth officer in the Military District Command IV in Frankfurt am Main . From 1976 to 1980 Bornemann studied economics and organizational sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Hamburg , from which he graduated with a degree in business administration. After graduating from 1980 to 1983, he was employed as a battery chief for an anti-aircraft battery in the Air Defense Regiment 100 in Wuppertal .

Service as a staff officer

Bornemann returned to Hamburg in 1983 and completed the 26th general staff course at the Bundeswehr Commanding Academy from 1983 to 1985. Subsequently, he was employed as a G4 staff department head (logistics) in the staff of Panzergrenadierbrigade 16 in Wentorf under the command of Brigadier General Jürgen von Falkenhayn . During this employment Bornemann was promoted to major in April 1986 .

From 1987 to 1988 Bornemann was a course participant in the Belgian general staff training at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels . In October 1989 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel . After serving as a consultant in the command staff of the Army (Fü H VI 2) in the Federal Ministry of Defense in Bonn , Bornemann became commander of the 6th anti-aircraft regiment in Lütjenburg in 1990 . Further assignments followed in the Ministry of Defense, first as a consultant for military policy principles in the command staff of the armed forces (Fü S III 1), then as a consultant for military policy in the office of State Secretary Jörg Schönbohm .

In 1994 he was employed for the first time at the NATO headquarters in Brussels as a department head on the staff of the German Military Representative (DMV) in the NATO Military Committee. In the same year he was promoted to colonel (i. G.) . Bornemann was then from 1996 to 2000 Head of the Military Policy Basics Division in the Armed Forces Command (Fü S III 1) in Bonn.

Uses in the general rank

As a Brigadier General Bornemann was deployed from 2000 to 2005 as Deputy Head of Staff Department Fü S III (Military Policy and Arms Control) in the Defense Ministry in Berlin. As a major general , Bornemann was Assistant Director Plans and Policy Division and Deputy Director in the International Military Staff (IMS) at NATO headquarters in Brussels from 2005 to 2008 .

On September 1, 2008 Bornemann took over the post of German Military Representative (DMV) in the NATO Military Committee and the EU Military Committee (EUMC), being appointed Lieutenant General . On September 19, 2009 Bornemann was elected Director International Military Staff (IMS) by the Chiefs of General Staff of the NATO countries . Therefore, in July 2010, he gave the post of DMV to Lieutenant General Roland Kather . As director of the IMS he succeeds the Dutch lieutenant general PJM Godderij .

Bornemann retired on June 25, 2013 with a big tattoo .

Bornemann was married to his wife Ingeborg and had four children with her.
