Jürgen Roth (* 4. November 1945 in Frankfurt am Main ; † 28. September 2017 ibid ) was a German journalist .

Life

After completing secondary school, Roth did an apprenticeship as a forwarding agent . In 1968 he got out and spent a year in Turkey. Since 1971 he has published books and television documentaries on organized crime with a focus on Eastern Europe , Germany and international terrorism . He was also active in the Business Crime Control organization . Roth was of the opinion that organized crime was deeply intertwined with the economic system and that it was part of economic life in Europe. Roth died after a serious illness in September 2017 at the age of 71.

Reception and legal proceedings

The Rheinische Post sees Roth as one of the “best experts on the subject.” However, he is considered a “controversial journalist and because of his polemics also controversial”, according to the Berliner Zeitung on July 9, 2009. Thomas Feltes , criminologist at the Ruhr University in Bochum , wrote about his publications: "Without his books the common reader would be missing something, and certainly also some investigators, who after their publication will greedily search for who is quoted, named or otherwise indirectly mentioned as there."

There were several legal proceedings against Roth because of his publications. Gerhard Schröder took legal action against the book Der Deutschland-Clan: The unscrupulous network of politicians, top managers and the judiciary , in which Roth also dealt with the former Federal Chancellor. The court ruled that Roth had to rewrite a passage in the book in which he linked Schröder's trip to the United Arab Emirates with his work for Gazprom . Schröder's lawyers tried, however, to prevent the sale of the new, uncontested issue by warning the booksellers. Roth had previously presented an excerpt of his research activities on the news portal Fair Observer .

After an injunction that the lawyer of a Leipzig restaurateur had obtained from the Leipzig Regional Court , the book Mafialand Germany had to be taken out of the book trade, after which it was only allowed to be sold with blackened passages.

Controversy

In February 2010, the former Bulgarian Minister of the Interior, Rumen Petkow , sued Jürgen Roth for defamation. Roth had linked Petkow to the Mafia and the illegal drug trade. On October 14, 2010, Roth was acquitted by the Sofia District Court and the allegation of defamation was dismissed.

From summer 2007, Roth wrote about an alleged sachsensumpf (assertion of membership in mafia structures at high politicians, lawyers, policemen and journalists.) Roth was by journalist Reiner Burger , of the sachsensumpf called a legend in a series of articles of the FAZ criticized. Burger also justified the criticism with previous lost court cases; According to Burger, Roth was sentenced to damages by the Hamburg Regional Court in 2000 for his book "Die graue Eminenz", published in 1999, and in 1999 for a television report. Burger threw Roth u. a. claim to have failed to speak directly to affected persons. In this context, Roth had to withdraw statements on his homepage about a Leipzig entrepreneur. The witness Roth relied on had said the untruth and was sentenced by the Dresden District Court in spring 2008 to a fine of 4,200 euros. Roth defended himself by stating that there was only one case where he had not asked the person directly for a blog entry, and criticized Burger's attacks as "kafkaesk" because Burger u. a. ignore that important witnesses in the "Saxon swamp" would be put under pressure. The investigative committee of the Saxon state parliament did not come to a clear conclusion about the "Saxon swamp" in 2009. The CDU and FDP see it as refuted, while the Greens and the Left state that they have not found any evidence, as the state government has largely refused access to the files. The prosecution did not investigate any further.
