In a marathon on July 26th in Duisburg , which served as a qualifying race for the all-German team at the European Athletics Championships in Stockholm , he prevailed against the GDR runners Kurt Hartung and Bruno Bartholome in 2: 30: 32.8 hours . At the European Championship marathon, which took place four weeks later, Wedeking took the DLV-Best time of 2:26:57 h in ninth place, but was more than six minutes behind the medal ranks. In October Wedeking won the German championship in Rottach-Egern with another German record of 2: 26: 08.2 h, together with Hein Arians and Hans Gerdes he also won the team championship. In 1959 Wedeking was defeated by Gustav Disse from Dahlhausen in the individual standings, while the Wilhelmshaven team defended the title with Wedeking, Wilhelm Gänßler and Hans Gerdes in the team standings.

In 1960 Wedeking started for VfL Wolfsburg and won his second individual title in the marathon. In 1961 he won the Paderborn Easter run and was German marathon champion for the third time. In 1963 he won the Enschede Marathon in an international match between the Federal Republic, France , Italy , Belgium , the Netherlands and Switzerland , finishing second overall , setting a new German record with 2: 25: 41.4 h. Starting again for SC Dahlhausen, he won his fourth championship title this year. At the end of the season he started at the Fukuoka Marathon , which had been moved to Tokyo that year on the route of the 1964 Olympic Games , but despite a time of 2:28:53 h did not get past 15th place.

Wedeking started once in the all-German team (at the European Championships in 1958) and represented the Federal Republic of Germany in six other international matches.
