Jacques "Jacky" Brichant (born March 28, 1930 in Charleroi ; † March 9, 2011 ) was a Belgian tennis and basketball player .

Life

Brichant was able to reach the semi-finals of the French championships in 1958 , and the quarter-finals in 1956 and 1959. In addition, he was at the Masters in Hamburg in 1958 in the final, which he lost to the Swede Sven Davidson .

In addition to numerous tournaments, Brichant played numerous games for the Belgian Davis Cup team . Between 1949 and 1965 he played 44 games and played a total of 120 games. He won 52 of 79 singles games and 19 of 41 doubles. He holds almost all records in Belgian Davis Cup history, only his doubles partner Philippe Washer has won more double victories. Brichant and Washer received special attention in the 1953 and 1957 seasons as they led Belgium to victory in the European Zone. The two beat Hungary , Great Britain , Italy and Denmark in 1953 . This was followed by the eliminations between the winners of the continental zones, in the first round of which Belgium beat the Indian team 5-0. In the final of the playoffs, Brichant and Washer faced the favored Americans , to whom they lost 4-1. In the 1957 season, Brichant and Washer repeated the success. In the opening game Hungary were again the opponent and it was the only game of the season in which Belgium used another player in Gino Mezzi. This was followed by victories against Mexico, Great Britain and Italy. This time Belgium received a bye in the playoffs and met the Americans again in the final. Brichant and Washer lost their first singles before winning doubles and Washer equalized the American leadership in his second singles. Despite a tight first set against Vic Seixas, Brichant had no chance in the end, he lost the game 8:10, 0: 6, 1: 6 and with it Belgium the game 2: 3.

In addition to his tennis career, Brichant was also active and successful as a basketball player. With the Royal IV team from Brussels , he won the Belgian championship five times between 1952 and 1958.

His father was Fernand Brichant was an active soccer player between 1913 and 1924 and was called to the Belgian national soccer team twice .

Awards

In 1957, Brichant and his doubles partner Washer received the Trophée national du Mérite sportif in Belgium , a national award for outstanding services in sport.
