history

On the occasion of a general assembly of the association for local and local history in the southern region (at that time based in Altena ) in October 1886 in Witten, a local and local history exhibition was held in parallel. Most of the exhibits were made available by the citizens of Witten. Since many lenders refused to pass on the exhibits to Altena, a separate association for local and regional studies was founded at the end of 1886 with the aim of building a museum in Witten.

In 1897, a plot of land on Husemannstrasse (then Blücherstrasse) was acquired with the condition that a museum be built there within twelve years. After the financing question could not be clarified for a long time, after a large donation from Friedrich Lohmann, jun. From 1909 to 1911 the Märkisches Museum was built as a concrete building.

At the turn of 1935/36 the acquired VOHM under Peter Emil Noelle land in the era of National Socialism forced to dissolve itself Masonic Lodge Friedrich Leopold to Markaner loyalty on Humboldtplatz low and gave it later to the city of Witten on. The Witten City Library was housed there until 1945 . In 1944, the then "club leader", Lord Mayor Karl-August Wietfeld , transferred the Märkische Museum belonging to the VOHM together with the collections of the city of Witten.
