Jakob Örn Sigurðarson (born April 4, 1982 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic basketball player . After studying in the United States , the Icelandic international began a professional career in 2005 with the German record champions Bayer Giants Leverkusen. After a year he moved to other positions in Spain and Hungary . After a season at his home club KR, he has been playing for Sundsvall Dragons in Sweden since 2009 , with whom he won the national championship in 2011. In 2014 Jakob Sigurðarson succeeded in qualifying for a final of the European Championship for the first time with the men's selection .

Career

After starting his career at his parent club Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur , Jakob Sigurðarson went to a high school in Fort Lauderdale , Florida in 2000 for a year of preparation in the United States . After a year he studied at the Birmingham – Southern College in Birmingham (Alabama) , where he played for the university team Panthers in the NAIA until 2005. Although this college league, in contrast to Division I of the NCAA , does not in itself serve the purpose of training for a professional sports career, the Icelandic national player initially received a contract with the German record champions Bayer Giants from Leverkusen in the top German division basketball Bundesliga . In the 2005/06 season , the team was able to improve slightly to tenth place compared to the previous season, but again not enough to move into the play-offs for the championship. With his average playing time of a little less than 15 minutes per game, Jakob Sigurðarson only achieved success rates of well below 40% with his throwing attempts and did not receive a new contract in Germany.

For the 2006/07 season, Jakob Sigurðarson therefore moved to Spain to the newly established Gestiberica team in Vigo in the third-highest division LEB 2 . In the play-downs , however, the penultimate lost against third-bottom CB Peñas Huesca and initially relegated. In the 2007/08 season Jakob Sigurðarson was active for the Testedző Egyesület in Kecskemét , Hungary , but again missed entry into the play-offs for the championship in ninth place in the top national division. After a season at his home club KR in his hometown, with whom he won the national championship in 2009 together with national teammate Jón Arnór Stefánsson , Jakob Sigurðarson played for the reigning champions Dragons from Sundsvall in the Swedish basket league from 2009 . After initially missing the title defense, Jakob Sigurðarson won the second championship for the club in 2011 together with his compatriot Hlynur Bæringsson . In the 2011/12 season, the Dragons with Jakob Sigurðarson, Hlynur Bæringsson and compatriot Pavel Ermolinskij again missed their title defense, while the first two made it to the final without Pavel Ermolinskij in 2013, but lost to the Södertälje Kings in six games of the final series.

Jakob Sigurðarson had made 85 appearances in the Icelandic national team by summer 2016. While the men's selection could only celebrate notable successes at the games of the small states of Europe , in the summer of 2014 you could meet with the experienced former Bundesliga professionals Jón Arnór Stefánsson , who also played in the NBA , and Logi Gunnarsson and the then BBL professional Hörður Vilhjálmsson qualify for the first time for a final round of the European Championship. At the 2015 European Championship finals , the Icelandic selection played their first final game against hosts Germany in the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin .
