Jakob von der Schulenburg (born March 25, 1515 in Beetzendorf ; † March 28, 1576 in Magdeburg , also Jakob II. ), Was an imperial field marshal .

Life

family

Jacob II was a member of the well - known Altmark noble family von der Schulenburg . His parents were Matthias III. von der Schulenburg († 1542) and Margarethe von der Lühe († 1525). He married Armgard von Münchhausen (1530–1579) in 1548 . The marriage remained childless.

Career

Jakob, intended by his father for community service, initially studied in Prague and Paris . However, since Jakob felt strongly drawn to the soldier's class, he left Paris without the knowledge of his father and went into imperial military service. He moved against the Turks under Antonius de Leva , was captured and lived as a slave for two years before King Sigismund I of Poland released him for 400 ducats . He then came to the Brandenburg electoral court , where he stayed until 1542. Together with Elector Joachim , he took part in the Reichstag in Speyer and then went back to the Turkish War with the Elector as Colonel of the Trabanten . During the siege of Ofen he fought together with his father, who had meanwhile consented to his military service, but was seriously wounded.

In 1545 Jakob became Imperial Rittmeister and served under the leadership of Duke Moritz von Sachsen . He made captain in Gommern in 1548 and transferred the siege of Magdeburg to him in 1550. Magdeburg was supposed to recognize the Augsburg Interim , which happened in 1551 after the capitulation of the city. In 1552 he moved to Tyrol , Innsbruck and finally again to Hungary against the Turks. He also took part in the Second Margrave War on the side of Moritz von Sachsen and Heinrichs von Braunschweig . Here he held the position of a Brunswick Colonel Field Marshal. In 1557 he went back to the Turkish War for Emperor Ferdinand I. This struck him on this occasion knighted. In 1563, together with his brothers Alexander and Daniel, Emperor Ferdinand I raised him to the status of imperial baron . In 1566 Jakob pulled over 1000 horsemen as a colonel against the Turks again, this time for Emperor Maximilian II. In 1567 he advanced to Reichsfeldmarschall, but must have left the Reich military service a little later.

In 1575 he accompanied his elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg to the Reichstag in Regensburg . There he fell ill and, in accordance with his wishes, was brought to Magdeburg to be closer to home, where he died on the sick bed after ten weeks.

Estates

After the inheritance comparison with his brothers, he ultimately retained 1/2 Angern from his father's inheritance  . From Achaz von Veltheim he acquired the villages of Hörsicht and Bülitz, which were originally Mansfeld fiefs that he merged with Angern into an estate . He had also received Mahlwinkel from Brandenburg Elector Joachim von Brandenburg . However, only his nephew and heir could actually take possession of it.

Jakob had the village church built in Angern and furnished it with vestments and advisory boards worth 600 Reichstalers . He paid interest on another 500 Reichstaler, of which the respective pastor in Angern was to participate.
