Previously, the district was part of the Dhaka Division .
Geographical location
The city is about 140 km north of the state capital Dhaka and 45 km northwest of Maimansingh on the right bank of the Old Brahmaputra , the former main stream of the Brahmaputra , whose main course, the Jamuna , has been 25 kilometers further west since the sudden change in the 1780s.

- 2001: 123.533
- 2011: 150.172
economy
Jamalpur is a transport hub and local center for the marketing and processing of the agricultural products in the area: rice , sugar cane , jute , tobacco , mustard seeds , wheat and lentils .
traffic
The city is the northern end point of the N4 national road, which begins north of Dhaka, and the intersection of a number of important regional roads leading in all directions, including the R460, which crosses the Old Brahmaputra at Jamalpur. The nearest bridges over the river are 45 km further southeast in Maimansingh and 17 km northwest near Melandaha.
The city is also an important rail hub. The most important extending through Jamalpur railway track is of about Dhaka Mymensingh incoming and further leading to the northwest route which once at Dewanganj the ferry dock achieved by Bahadurabad (Bahadurabad Railway Ferry Ghât) on the Jamuna. With the opening of the 4.8 km long Bangabandhu Bridge near Sirajganj in 1998, which for the first time established a permanent rail and road connection between the parts of Bangladesh separated from the Jamuna, the two previously important ferry connections across the river lost their importance. The freight ferry service at Bahadurabad Ghat, which was then only operated to a limited extent, was completely stopped in 2010 due to a new sandbank in the river. The passenger trains coming from Dhaka and stopping in Jamalpur end in Dewanganj Bazar today.
From this main line branches off in Jamalpur a line to the southwest, which runs over Tarakandi and from there to the south to the Bangabandhu Setu East Railway Station and thus to the Bangabandhu Bridge; By 1998, this route ended in Jagannathganj Ghat, where the other railway ferry ran across the Jamuna southwest to Sirajganj until the opening of the Bangabandhu Bridge.
