Jan Mikołaj Chodkiewicz (born December 14, 1738 in Danzig , † February 2, 1781 in Chornobyl , Poland-Lithuania , today Ukraine ) was a Polish-Lithuanian aristocrat of Ruthenian origin . He came from the noble family of Chodkiewicz , was count on Szkłów in what is now Belarus and Starost von Wielona .

Life

Jan Mikołaj was the son of Adam Tadeusz Chodkiewicz (1711–1745) and Ewa Rozalia Chodkiewicz (1710–1769), née Hutten-Czapska . After graduating from Vilnius University in 1757, he joined the Royal Polish Army with the rank of colonel . In 1758 and 1759 he took part in the Seven Years' War on the French side . In 1764 he was a member of the Polish Sejm , who prepared the election of a new Polish king and initiated some reforms . He voted for the election of Count Stanislaus August Poniatowski as the new king, who later elevated him to the rank of general as the chosen king out of gratitude and appointed him General Starost of the Duchy of Samogitia , an administrative unit within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania . During the Confederation of Bar he was fickle and, depending on the politico-military situation, also supported Russian and Prussian military leaders who had his private latifundia protected. In 1778 he became lieutenant general in the Russian army , from which he resigned a little later. He was the bearer of the Order of St. Stanislaus (from 1764) and the Order of the White Eagle (from 1774).

Jan Mikołaj Chodkiewicz died on February 2, 1781 in Chernobyl and was buried in the Orthodox monastery of Supraśl in Podlasie .

Marriage and offspring

He married Maria Ludwika Chodkiewicz (1744-1816), née Rzewuska, in Podhorce in 1766 . Several children emerged from the marriage:

  • Elżbieta Chodkiewicz (1767–1804), married Prince Maciej Radziwiłł (1749–1800)
  • Rozalia Chodkiewicz (1768–1794), married Prince Aleksander Lubomirski (1751–1804)
  • Aleksander Franciszek Chodkiewicz (1776–1838), politician, researcher and poet
  • Wacław Chodkiewicz, Józef Chodkiewicz, Ksawery Chodkiewicz and Anna Chodkiewicz died at a young age
