January Suchodolski
January Antoni Michał Suchodolski (born September 19, 1797 in Grodno , † March 20, 1875 in Siedlce ) was a Polish war painter and officer from the Polish noble family of Suchodolski or Suchodoletz . He was the brother of the well-known Polish poet Rajnold Suchodolski . His grave is in Oleksin in the Siedlce district .
Life
Suchodolski joined the army of the Duchy of Warsaw in 1810 . Initially, as an autodidact , he copied pictures of Horace Vernet and issued them for his own. When Tsar Nicholas I saw one of these pictures (" King Władysław's death near Varna "), he is said to have given him his tobacco box. He took part in the Russo-Persian War 1826-1828 , where he made a cycle of paintings on his behalf for Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich's staff . These pictures are in the Geographic Museum of the Belarusian city of Gomel . He married Leokadia Suchodolska from the Janina coat of arms community , who gave birth to their son Edward Maksymilian Rajnold in 1830 and Zdzisław Aleksander Mamert in 1835 . The latter also became a painter. In 1830 Suchodolski became an adjutant to General Wincenty Krasiński . Equipped with letters of recommendation from Napoleon II , his mother and Jérôme Bonaparte to Horace Vernet, he tried to become his pupil. But as soon as he was accepted, the November uprising against Russian rule broke out in Poland in 1830 , in which he took part with his three brothers. After the suppression of the uprising (his brother Rajnold came around, his other brothers Jacek and Valentin fell into Russian captivity), he decided in Italy to stay and took in 1832 with a national artist fellowship trained at the French Academy in Rome at a Year of which in Horace Vernet's workshop. In 1837 he returned to Warsaw after an amnesty . At the request of Tsar Nicholas I, he traveled to Saint Petersburg , where he was commissioned to create a cycle of pictures about the Russian campaign in 1812 . In 1860 he co-founded the Society for the Support of Art in Warsaw.
He gained fame for his historical painting from the Napoleonic period , as well as a painter of romantic pictures with a patriotic character . He was also known as a painter of horses .
