Jason Dupasquier (born September 7, 2001 in Bulle , Canton of Friborg ; † May 30, 2021 in Florence ) was a Swiss motorcycle racer .

Life

Jason Dupasquier was the son of motocross - and Supermoto -Fahrers Philippe Dupasquier , who as the most successful off-road driver applies his country.

Career

At the age of six, Dupasquier first sat on a motorcycle - a 50cc motocross machine. From 2008 he entered the Swiss Supermoto Championship and immediately won the titles in the classes up to 65 and up to 85 cm³. After further national championship titles in the supermotor sector, he switched to road racing in 2015 and started in the ADAC Junior Cup .

In the 2016 season, Dupasquier immediately won the title in the GP class of the ADAC Northern Europe Cup . In 2017 he started in the FIM CEV Moto3 Junior World Championship and finished 30th in the final ranking on a KTM from the CarXpert Interwetten Junior Moto3 team . In 2018 he competed in the CarXpert team in six of the twelve races for the FIM-CEV-Moto3 championship and finished 29th overall with nine points.

In the 2019 season, Dupasquier competed in the FIM CEV Moto3 Championship and the Red Bull Rookies Cup at the same time . In the FIM-CEV series, he improved to 21st place in the final ranking. He finished the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup 2019 with consistent top 10 placements in eighth overall.

For the 2020 season , the German team PrüstelGP signed him as a regular driver for the Moto3 class of the motorcycle world championship . In his debut year, Dupasquier felt his way up to the level of the world's best. He could not achieve world championship points, his best result was 17th place at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans .

In the season 2021 started Dupasquier still on a KTM of Erl teams. He showed a significant increase in his results and was regularly in the points. At the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez , he achieved his best placement in the world championship with seventh place.

On May 29, 2021, Dupasquier crashed in Moto3 qualifying for the Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello at the exit of the second Arrabbiata corner. The following drivers Ayumu Sasaki and Jeremy Alcoba could no longer evade. Dupasquier suffered severe head injuries and a multiple trauma . It could not be determined whether these injuries were caused by his own fall or by the impact of Sasaki or Alcoba. He was with a rescue helicopter in the Azienda ospedaliero-universitaria Careggi ( University Hospital Careggi of Florence University flown), where an emergency operation . He succumbed to his injuries on May 30, 2021 at the age of 19.

The Prüstel team decided not to start the race after the accident and withdrew the remaining driver Ryusei Yamanaka . However, the race weekend went as planned after the accident and the news of death. Already during and after the Grand Prix, the question of whether the race weekend should have taken place or should be broken off was controversial. In addition, the direction of the international TV signal, which mainly showed pictures of the scene of the accident with care for the injured pilot and the waiting rescue helicopter, was particularly criticized by the drivers of the MotoGP class.
