Jean-Paul Barbe (born April 17, 1939 in Nantes , France) is a French German studies scholar, professor emeritus, cultural scientist, translator and author of various novels, essays and poems in French and German. He lives in Nantes and Berlin.

Life

Jean-Paul Barbe spent his childhood in different places in Brittany . After attending the humanistic grammar school in Nantes , he began studying German and English at the University of Rennes . As one of the first scholarship holders of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), he spent a year at the University of Tübingen . There he wrote his master's thesis for the home university with Guignard on “The upbringing of the knight in the Nibelungenlied and with Gottfried von Strasbourg. A comparative study ”. After returning to France, he passed the first state examination (CAPES) in 1961 and the second state examination (Agrégation) in 1962. After completing his military service as a lecturer in German at the Ecole Spéciale Militaire in Coëtquidan , he taught German at high schools in Angers , then in Nantes. There he received a teaching position at the German Institute of the newly founded university in 1966, became assistant in 1969, later senior assistant and wrote his habilitation thesis «Le voyage fictif véhicule de la satire et de l'utopie dans la littérature de langue allemande de 1770 à 1805» (“Die fictional journey as a vehicle for satire and utopia in German-language literature from 1770 to 1805 ”), which he defended in 1981 at the Sorbonne University . In the same year he was appointed professor at Angers University; In 1985 he moved to the University of Nantes , where he was also head of the institute for several years.

Until his retirement in 1999, Jean-Paul Barbe was a member of the National Appointments Commission in Paris (Conseil National de Universités); For a time he took part in the Agrégationsjury and was deputy chairman of AGES (French Association of Germanists). At the same time, he campaigned within the UFR de Langues (amalgamation of the individual new philologies within the Philosophical Faculty) in Nantes for the development and expansion of research: In 1992 he founded the CRINI, an interdisciplinary research group with around 40 members that continues to this day and in which Germanists cooperate with Englishists, Hispanists, Lusists and Italianists in the field of European cultural anthropology. In this context, he supervised various doctoral theses and organized numerous colloquia. In 1994, together with Jackie Pigeaud , he founded the interdisciplinary Entretiens de la Garenne Lemot, where he was an active member until 2001.

He participated in the founding of the partnership between the University of Nantes and the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf and initiated another partnership with the University of Rostock in 1987 . At the same time he was a consultant for the Task Force Human Resources of the European Commission (DG XXI) in Brussels; on their behalf he helped organize the Université Européenne d'Eté in Nantes in 1991.

Outside the university, he founded the Center Culturel Franco-Allemand (CCFA) in 1993 with the aim of promoting regional knowledge of Germany in civil society. In order to break the only bilateral framework of such intercultural awareness raising, he expanded it in 1997 to the European cultural center, Center Culturel Européen (CCE). In addition, he was Vice President of the Maison de l'Europe in Nantes until 2017. He was a member of the editorial team of various magazines, including Place Publique from 2005 to 2015 , and is involved in European politics in the EUROBLUES Internet initiative.

The scientific work mainly relates to the initial research area, the history of ideas and mentality at the end of the 18th century, but also testify to other interests, such as B. the literature of the GDR, the sociology of translation.
