Jean Baptiste Ziz (born October 8, 1779 in Mainz , † December 1, 1829 there ) was a pharmacist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Ziz ".

Career

Johann Baptist Ziz was born in Mainz as the son of the wine merchant and landowner Melchior Ziz. From 1796 he began his apprenticeship with the Mainz pharmacist Baymer. After his training he studied in Erfurt with Johann Bartholomäus Trommsdorff and in Berlin and then worked as a pharmacist in Kassel , Frankfurt and Darmstadt . In 1807 he returned to Mainz , then French , and passed the pharmacist examination there. However, he did not take over a pharmacy, but mainly dealt with botany. He became a member of various learned societies (Regensburger Botanische Gesellschaft, Senckenbergische Gesellschaft in Frankfurt a. M., Wetterau Society in Hanau), undertook botanical trips to southern France and the Pyrenees and stood with Philipp Salzmann , Augustin-Pyrame de Candolle , Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch and other botanists in lively exchange.

When the typhoid de Mayence 1813 Mainz struck as Kriegspest, he took over in the absence of provisor the management of Mainz Mohrenapotheke. In 1819 he took over the post of natural science teacher at the grammar school in Mainz and became a pharmacist in the medical college . After he had become medical advisor in 1824, he received his doctorate from the University of Erfurt in 1826 . In 1829 he was accepted into the board of directors of the Mainz University Fund. He died on December 1, 1829. He bequeathed his rich library to the Mainz high school and his very sizeable herbarium to the Grand Ducal Museum in Darmstadt. Today it forms the basis of the herbarium of the Botanical Institute of the Technical University .
