Jeanne Added (2015)

Jeanne Added (born September 25, 1980 in Reims ) is a French singer and songwriter who initially performed mainly in a jazz context .

Act

Added received classical violin lessons as a child ; as a teenager she took cello and singing lessons at the regional conservatory and got into jazz. She performed at the Festival in Uzeste in the Compagnie Lubat with Bernard Lubat and André Minvielle and left Reims to sing jazz in Paris . Consequently, she gave up playing the violin and became the first female singer to study in a jazz class at the Paris Conservatory . She later also studied at the Royal Academy of Music .

However, she began her professional career as a cellist and bass guitarist. She doubled the cello playing with singing in groups like Melc (album of the same name in 2004) and the quartet by Vincent Courtois ( What Do You Mean By Silence? ). In 2005 she brought Toufic Farroukh to sing for his album Tootya . Together with Claudia Solal she acted as a background singer on Léo Ferrés Poète, Vos Papiers! First as a jazz interpreter, she sang with Pierre de Bethmann ( Oui, Cubique ), John Greaves , Vincent Courtois ( live in Berlin ) and Baptiste Trotignon ( Song Song Song ).

Already in 2003 she founded the trio Yes Is a Pleasant Country together with saxophonist Vincent Lê Quang and pianist Bruno Ruder , in which the singing is integrated into the ensemble playing based on the example of the duo of Jeanne Lee with Ran Blake . On their debut album (2011) they interpreted compositions by Lê Quang as well as poems by William Butler Yeats or EE Cummings , pieces by Mingus , jazz standards , chansons by Serge Gainsbourg and songs by the Beatles . In 2009 she founded the post- grunge trio Linnake with Julien Desprez on guitar and Sébastien Brun on percussion.

In 2011, Added released their solo EP # 1 , followed by the album with the collaborative trio Yes is a Pleasant Country . In 2012/13 she made a name for herself in the French indie scene with around 40 appearances as a duo with Marielle Chatain (from The Dø ). Then she decided to pursue a solo career and in 2015 released the album Be Sensational with a subtle mix of electro and hypnotic pop, which was very successful in France despite the English lyrics. The single A War Is Coming (2015), in which Added gave the feeling of being at war with the whole world, but above all with himself, charted in France and Wallonia . Produced by the electro-pop duo Maestro (Frédéric Soulard and Mark Kerr), the album Radiate followed in 2018, sometimes much more electronically .

Prizes and awards

The trio album Yes Is a Pleasant Country was nominated for the Les Victoires du Jazz award in 2011 . Added was for the category of album of the year of discovery of the Victoires de la Musique for her debut album Be Sensational nominated. In 2019 she won the Victoires de la Musique's best artist award , and her album Radiate was recognized as the best rock album there.
