Jericho is the first re-release by the Canadian folk and country rock group The Band since they broke up in the late 1970s. The album was released on November 2, 1993 on Pyramid Records , a sub-label of Rhino . Of the band's founding members, only Rick Danko , Levon Helm and Garth Hudson remain, apart from producer John Simon , who had already produced the group's first albums. Robbie Robertson decided against participating in the reunion, while Richard Manuel had already committed suicide in 1986. The two musicians were replaced by guitarist Jim Weider , drummer Randy Ciarlante and keyboardist Richard Bell . Fourteen guest musicians can also be heard on the album.
Jericho almost exclusively contained cover versions of songs by other artists, which can mainly be explained by the fact that the band had lost their most important songwriter in Robertson. Only Remedy , The Caves of Jericho and Move to Japan were compositions by band members. There was also an older recording on the album, Country Boy , on which Richard Manuel still plays.
Jericho reached number 166 in the US Billboard album charts. The album was received favorably by the critics, but could not build on earlier successes in this regard either.
On the cover of the album the pink house in Saugerties in the state of New York displayed in which the band, then under the name "The Hawks", along with Bob Dylan , among others, The Basement Tapes recorded, and after also their debut album Music from Big Pink .
