Jerome Dhas Varuvel SDB (born October 21, 1951 in Paduvoor , Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Kuzhithurai .

Life

Jerome Dhas Varuvel first attended the boys' seminary of the Kottar diocese in Nagercoil and then from 1970 to 1973 the seminary in Poonamallee . In 1976 he joined the religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco and made temporary profession on May 24, 1978 . After his perpetual profession on May 24, 1981, he studied from 1981 to 1986 at the Pontifical University of the Salesians in Rome, where he obtained degrees in economics and theology as well as a licentiate in pedagogy. Pope John Paul II gave him the sacrament of ordination on June 2, 1985 .

From 1986 he was active in the novice training of Salesians at various locations in India. From 1996 to 2001 he was rector of the St. Mary of the Angels co- cathedral in the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore . As a provincial councilor from 1999 to 2003 he served in the provincial government of his order. From 2010 onwards he was a novice master .

Pope Francis appointed him on December 22, 2014 as the first bishop of the diocese of Kuzhithurai, established on the same date . The bishop of Kottar , Peter Remigius , donated him the episcopal ordination on February 24 of the following year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Madurai , Antony Pappusamy , and the Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore , George Antonysamy .

Pope Francis accepted his early resignation on June 6, 2020.
