Jesus College (Oxford)

The Jesus College is one of the colleges of Oxford University . It was founded by Elizabeth I on the suggestion of clergyman Hugh Price in 1571 for scholars from Wales . Price is often referred to as the "true founder" because of the financial contributions that made the foundation possible. Until the middle of the 19th century, the members of Jesus College came almost exclusively from the Principality . Today there is still a strong group of Welsh students.

In 1907, the British archaeologist and writer TE Lawrence, known as Lawrence of Arabia, received a scholarship to Jesus College. Other well-known students were Baron Wilson of Rievaulx (1916–1995; real name Harold Wilson ), British Prime Minister from 1964 to 1970 and from 1974 to 1976, as well as party leader of the Labor Party and the Indian economist Deepak Lal , advisor to the World Bank and president of Mont until 2010 Pelerin Society . Sir Peter J Ratcliffe , who received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2019 , was a Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College from 1992 to 2004.
