Joachim A. Lang

Joachim A. Lang (* 1959 in Spraitbach ) is a German journalist, television film director and author.

Joachim A. Lang is currently head of the “Special Projects, Music and Theater” department at SWR , he is a director and author of cinema and television films, lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and festival director. Lang studied German and history at the Universities of Heidelberg and Stuttgart. In his master's thesis he examined Bertolt Brecht's “War Primer”. Since 1986 he has worked at SDR as a director, author and editor. Even in his early days as an artist, he made documentaries and features and directed television programs, shows and films. In 1991 he was in charge of the development of the 26-part ARD series “That was once upon a time. Die Zeitgeistrevue with Alfred Adabei ”, for which he also directed. In 1996 he invented, developed and managed the successful ARD brand “ Tigerenten Club ”. The film portraits “Yes is good, no is good” for BR and “Where I am is Panama” were made about the life of the children's book author Janosch under Lang's direction . To mark the 20th anniversary of the unification of Germany, in 2010 he developed “Die Deutschlandrevue”, a television theater production produced by SWR with the Staatsschauspiel Dresden for the Erste and 3sat , for which he also directed. Lang was the director of innovative film and television projects, such as “Don Giovanni in Stuttgart”, a performance at the Stuttgart Opera and in the Schlossgarten, which was broadcast live in full length by 3sat, in parallel with excerpts and with Harald Schmidt moderated background information in the SWR and as an Internet live stream with six individually selectable camera perspectives. This was followed by projects with the Nibelungen Festival in Worms and the Bregenz Festival with “Turandot”.

At the University of Stuttgart, Lang submitted his doctoral thesis entitledEpic Theater as Film: Stage Plays by Bertolt Brecht in the Audiovisual Media” (published in 2006).

From 2009 to 2016, Lang developed and directed the Brecht Festival in Augsburg, which he made into a trademark of the city and Bavaria that was celebrated by critics and the public and an integral part of the German cultural calendar.

In 2013 he made the film " George " for ARD , in which Götz George played his father, the actor Heinrich George. For this work he received the German Television Prize 2013 and the World Gold Medal at the New York Film Festival.

Lang is Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Academy for Spoken Word in Stuttgart.

Joachim A.
