Joachim Engel-Denis

Joachim Engel-Denis (born November 7, 1933 ; † January 29, 2013 in Mainz ) was a German actor and director .

Life

Joachim Engel-Denis worked mainly as a theater actor on various stages in Germany and, since the 1960s, as a director on theaters in Germany and Switzerland . As an actor, Engel-Denis interpreted a wide repertoire , which included plays by William Shakespeare , the German authors of the Classical and Romantic periods , the theater of the turn of the century , but also plays from modern times and contemporary theater. His stage roles included Don Juan in Much Ado About Nothing , William Mareshall, Count of Pembroke in King John , Don Manuel Enriquez in Lady Kobold of Calderon , St. Just and Robespierre in Danton's Death and the Baron with Mourning Ribbon in Faith Love Hope .

In 1964 he staged the comedy Pygmalion at the Oldenburg State Theater . In 1965 the play A Hermit is discovered by James Saunders followed there . In 1968 he directed Sławomir Mrożek's play Tango at the Ulm City Theater . In the 1970s he regularly staged at the Stadttheater St. Gallen , including Die Righteous (1976), The Night of Justice by Ulrich Bräker (1977), the Life of Galilei (1978) and Danton's Death (1979). In 1979 he also directed the play The Wild Duck there .

In 1986 he took over the direction of Shakespeare's early work Die Komödie der Errungen at the Lübeck City Theater . At the Stadttheater Bremerhaven he staged the Shakespeare plays The Taming of the Shrew (1989) and King Johann . In 1993 he staged the play The Obsessed at the Osnabrück City Theater . There he also directed Carl Sternheim's comedy The Snob in 1993 .

Engel-Denis also worked as a speaker for radio plays , mainly for the Süddeutscher Rundfunk . In 1959 he worked there in a radio play version of Franz Grillparzer's play Des Meeres und der Liebe Wellen ; his partners were Gertrud Kückelmann , Michael Degen and Lina Carstens . In 1960, the SDR recorded the radio play Portrait of a Murderer , together with Gerhard Just . In 1963 he took on a role in the radio play Visit to the rectory by Ilse Aichinger .

According to his own statements in a conversation with the journalist and cultural scientist Sabine Hock in 1989, he was engaged in radio play recordings for the Hessischer Rundfunk "from the hallway" for the television series Die Firma Hesselbach . From 1960 to 1963 he played the role of office worker and "company playboy" Fred Lindner in a total of 41 episodes ; In the course of the series, Lindner is promoted to authorized officer and becomes the son-in-law of the Hesselbach couple.

A few more television works followed until the 1970s, such as the 1971 television film Operation Walküre , in which he played Adam von Trott zu Solz . Engel-Denis later worked exclusively for the theater. He was married to the actress and singer Dagmar Sorel for the third time and was the father of an adult son.

Engel-Denis lived in Budenheim near Mainz . He has four grown children and most recently lived with his fourth wife, the costume and set designer Gisela Spahlinger. Engel-Denis died of heart failure on January 29, 2013 in the Vincenz Hospital in Mainz.
