Joachim Herrmann (astronomer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joachim Herrmann (born April 19, 1931 in Tübingen ) is a German astronomer and multiple author of astronomy and space research . For many years he was director of the Westphalian public observatory and the Recklinghausen planetarium, which he established, and expanded it from humble beginnings into a leading institute for adult education .

Life

Joachim Herrmann studied astronomy, mathematics and physics in Heidelberg and Munich . At the end of 1952 he joined the Sternfreunde Association . On January 22, 1956, he founded the observatory in Reutlingen . After working as an editor for non-fiction books at Bertelsmann- Verlag Gütersloh, he was scientific director of the Wilhelm Foerster observatory in Berlin from 1957 to 1962 .

When the city of Recklinghausen was looking for a full-time astronomer for its observatory again, he was appointed to head it in 1962. In order to make the lectures and star tours even more instructive, he expanded the observatory in 1966 with a planetarium (model ZKP 1 from Carl Zeiss , Jena). The ZKP 2 (Skymaster) model followed in 1985. In April 1996 he retired and continues to live in Recklinghausen.

Joachim Herrmann became known beyond Germany through his books and specialist articles and gave numerous lectures throughout Germany. From the 1970s until 1995 he was a regular astronomical employee of the magazine Kosmos and published in many other magazines and newspapers. He is one of the three most widely read authors of popular scientific astronomy books in the German-speaking world. From 1957 to 1966 he also edited the newsletter of the Association of Star Friends.
