Joachim Rentzel (* 1. September 1694 in Hamburg , † 20th September 1768 ) was a German jurist and hamburgers councilor .

Life

After completing his education at the Johanneum School of Academics and the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg, Rentzel studied law at the University of Rostock from Easter 1716 , then moved to the University of Orléans and completed his studies there on June 20, 1719 as a licentiate in both rights.

He settled in Hamburg as a lawyer and was elected councilor on October 10, 1737, to succeed his late brother-in-law Joachim Sillem (1691–1737). As such, he took part in negotiations on international law issues in relation to trade in the Mediterranean , which at that time had almost completely come to a standstill for Hamburg due to piracy , in Bremen and obtained a favorable settlement for Hamburg. In the years 1747 and 1748 Rentzel took over the praetur and then became landlord in Bill- and Ochsenwerder . In 1752 he became a colonel and thus chief of the Hamburg civil guard . Rentzel also administered the office of the censor . After the fire in the main church Sankt Michaelis in 1750, Rentzel headed the deputation for the reconstruction of this church, the new building of which was inaugurated in 1762 after eleven years of construction. In 1758 Rentzel also became forest lord in Hansdorf and Wohldorf and in 1762 land lord in Hamm and Horn , as well as on Hamburger Berg . In 1762 he was also elected scholar , took over the office of proto- scholar in 1765 and thus became the chief overseer of the Hamburg schools.

In the mayoral election in 1765, councilors Joachim Rentzel and Vincent Rumpff (1701–1781) were shortlisted. The lot had to decide and the choice fell on Rumpff.

Rentzel was a son of the Danish chancellery Peter Rentzel (1672-1722) and his wife Catharina Sillem (1674-1706), daughter of the councilor Hieronymus Sillem (1648-1710). His sister Anna Margaretha Rentzel (1697–1736) was married to the councilor Joachim Sillem (1691–1737) for the second time .

On November 29, 1723 he married Margaretha Cecilia Vegesack (1692–1736), daughter of the lawyer Karl Gustav Vegesack and widow of the lawyer Conrad Vegesack. After the death of his first wife, Rentzel married Elisabeth Clamer († 1743), widow of the pastor in Bergedorf Johann Vincent Behn (1688-1734), a second marriage on January 23, 1738 . Rentzel had a total of 10 children from both marriages.
