The Jochberg lies at an altitude of 1,565 meters in the Bavarian Prealps between Walchensee and Kochelsee . During the Würm Ice Age it was a nunatak , i.e. a mountain whose summit protruded about 150 m from the ice flow. The Kesselberg , the cut between Herzogstand and Jochberg, was an alpine gate ; a branch of the Isar glacier, which in turn was a branch of the Inntal glacier , flowed here at an altitude of approx. 1400 m above sea level. NN through. The north side of the Jochberg is characterized by vertical main dolomite slabs from the Upper Triassic . The south side impresses above all with its steep grass slopes.
The Jochberg gets its name from the place Altjoch am Kochelsee. The Jocher resident there had grazing rights on the Jochberg and were allowed to cut wood there. They also built the Jocheralm.
Because of its view of the surroundings, it is a popular peak for excursions and is considered an easy mountain hike, also suitable for families. The ascent takes place from the Kesselberg above Urfeld , alternatively a little longer from Jachenau , Sachsenbach on the east bank of the Walchensee or from Kochel . Below the summit is at 1382 m above sea level. NN the Jocheralm, which is only managed in summer .
When the view is clear, the Munich Olympic Tower can be seen to the north . In very good conditions, the clouds of steam from the cooling towers of the Isar II nuclear power plant can also be seen. The Jochberg is climbed a lot in winter too; As a rule, trodden tracks lead up the path from the Kesselberg even with medium snow depths .
The summit has been closed to paragliders by the landowner since September 10, 2015 , as, contrary to what has been agreed, they also start south and thus disturb and endanger the grazing cattle on the very steep southern slope.
On New Year's Eve 2016 , a major fire broke out on the Graseck , a 1281 meter high mountain around 1.2 km north of the Jochberg, which quickly spread to a square kilometer of forest and meadows, whereupon a disaster was declared.
Planned pumped storage plant
In February 2013, preliminary considerations by the Bavarian Energy Alliance became known to build a pumped storage lake on the southeast flank of the Jochberg in the hollow of the Jocheralm. On September 6, 2014, it became known that the Bavarian State Government would not pursue the project for economic reasons.
