Joe Santos
Joe Santos (born June 9, 1931 as Joseph John Minieri in Brooklyn , New York City , New York , † March 18, 2016 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American film actor who was also listed under the name Joe Russell .
Life
The son of Italian parents grew up in the New York borough of Brooklyn in the Red Hook neighborhood . His father, Joseph John Minieri, had died on the day his son was born. His mother Rose Sarno became a singer and manager of nightclubs in New York and Havana, and married the Puerto Rican singer Daniel Santos . Originally baptized in his father's name, Santos took his stepfather's last name.
After attending military school, Santos served in the Korean War . After his return, he first studied at Fordham University before moving to Havana as a used car importer. There he married Mary Montero on March 31, 1958. Together with this, Santos returned to the United States after the victory of the revolution in Cuba .
Santos, who only made his breakthrough as an actor in his early 40s, played mainly guest and supporting roles in television series and films . In the role of the police officer Lt. Dennis Becker in the television series Detective Rockford - a call is enough , Joe Santos achieved special fame alongside James Garner from the mid-1970s, for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award in 1979 as "best supporting actor in a drama series" . He also took on this role in several later television films for the series. He also had a recurring role as a lieutenant in the police force in the 1980s in the television series Hardcastle & McCormick ( Lt. Frank Harper ) and Magnum ( Lt. Nolan Page ). He later played the gangster Angelo Garepe in the hit series The Sopranos .
Joe Santos died on March 18, 2016 in a hospital in Santa Monica of complications from a heart attack two days earlier .
Santo's marriage to Mary Montero, who died in 1988, had three children, including director and producer Perry Santos . In his second marriage, Santos was married to Nancy Hobson. His cousin was the director and screenwriter Joseph W. Sarno .
