The Johan Ruud is a former Norwegian research ship from the University of Tromsø .

history

The ship was built in 1976 under the hull number 71 at the Sterkoder Mekaniske Verksted shipyard in Kristiansund . The keel was laid in August and the launch in October 1976. The ship was completed on December 4, 1976. The stern trawler was named after the Norwegian marine biologist Johan Tidemand Ruud.

In 2019 the ship was decommissioned.

description

The ship belonged to the Norwegian government. It was operated by the University of Tromsø, which used it for research trips. It was also available to the Havforskningsinstituttet.

The ship was used for fisheries research as well as for marine biological , geological and oceanographic research. The main areas of application were the coastal waters in northern Norway, the Lofoten , Spitsbergen and the Barents Sea .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by a Wichmann diesel engine (type: 4 AX) that acts on a controllable pitch propeller . It is equipped with a bow thruster .

For power generation two generators are available, identified by Scania diesel engines: each with 65 (type D8)  kW power driven.

The ship was equipped with various sensors and echo sounders as well as a CTD rosette . Corresponding winches were available for fishing research and for towing research equipment. Three laboratories were set up on board. Cold rooms were also available for research.

The ship had space for eight crew members and eleven scientists. Eight single cabins were available for the crew members, one single and five double cabins for the scientists.

Whereabouts of the ship

In March 2020, Rogdo Trebåtforening bought the ship for 2.4 million NOK . The chairman of the association is the Norwegian Leif Einar Lothe, who became known in 2004 for the television series Fjords Cowboys . Lothe, also known by his stage name Lothepus, is planning an expedition around the North Pole with the ship , during which the ship will navigate both the Northeast and Northwest Passages and which will be accompanied by TV 2 . The name of the ship is Iwan , named after Iwan Eide Knudsen, one of the owners of the Norwegian company Spar Kjøp, who provided funds to purchase the ship.
