Johann Abraham Küpper (born October 3, 1779 in Elberfeld-Uellendahl ; died April 1, 1850 in Koblenz ) was a German Protestant theologian and educator .

Life

Johann Abraham Küpper was the son of the bandmaker Johann Daniel Küpper and Anna Maria Jonghaus. He attended a higher Latin school in Gemarke , the principal of which was HJ Grimm. From spring 1796 he studied theology at the University of Duisburg . In autumn 1798 he received his leaving certificate. On his 19th birthday he was examined and accepted as a candidate for a pastorate. Since he did not get a pastor's position for the time being, he had to work as a private teacher in the surrounding communities. During this time he met his future wife Wilhelmine Markus, whom he married in September 1802. A total of six children resulted from this marriage.

In 1801 he received his first pastor's position in Mettmann . As a parish priest he also took on his first tasks beyond parish boundaries. He was a member of the management trio as Scriba in the Düsseldorf class assembly in 1804, as inspector in 1808 and 1810 and as assessor in 1812 . From 1809 to 1813 he also headed the central charity office of the canton of Mettmann. He held various management positions in the interim Generalgouvernement Berg in Düsseldorf (district inspector ( superintendent ), school inspector and member of the examination committee for the candidates).

In 1815 he was appointed to Iserlohn . In 1817 he was committed to the newly founded evangelical community in Trier by a royal order . On the day of the Reformation he gave his first sermon in Trier. At the same time, Küpper was appointed consistorial and school councilor in the Trier government . He gave lessons in religion at the Trier grammar school . In 1830 the Provincial Synod of the Rhine Province elected him as President and in 1835 the first Synod for the whole of the Rhineland, which met on the occasion of the introduction of a new church order, elected him as the new President. During his time in Trier from 1817 to 1836 he also founded Protestant congregations, e.g. B. that of Prüm . Shortly afterwards he was appointed to the Royal Consistory in Koblenz. From 1836, Bishop Wilhelm Roß was general superintendent of the newly constituted Rhenish Church, and Küpper was appointed his deputy. He received the title of Vice General Superintendent. In 1842 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, Second Class with Oak Leaves. In 1843 he was at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn to Dr. theol. PhD.

Küppers and Roß basically had no major differences of opinion, but at the Prussian general synod at Pentecost in 1846 Küpper vigorously advocated the Union , which he understood as a natural position of the Protestant Church. In the autumn of 1846, Bishop Roß retired. Thereafter Küpper moved up to the general superintendent of the Rhine province. At his solemn introduction to the assembled consistory, his representatives expressly welcomed the fact that he was "with full confidence and sincere love for the first time in his new relationship with the Synod in the midst of it". Küpper stood for balance and consensus between state and church. In 1848, triggered by the unrest of the March Revolution , not only Küpper's person seemed to be in question, but the entire office of general superintendent. The complete liberation of the church from state influence seemed possible. But at the Extraordinary Synod in 1849 he managed to keep his office as General Superintendent. This office was only abolished in 1948.

Johann Abraham Küpper died after a short illness and was buried in Koblenz on May 4, 1850.

Küpper and the Marx and von Westphalen families

On March 30, 1828 he confirmed Johanna Bertha Julie Jenny von Westphalen in the Trier Church of the Trier. He chose the saying from Paul's letter to Galatians 2:20 . On March 23, 1834, Kuepper confirmed Karl Marx and Edgar von Westphalen . At the "Gymnasium zu Trier" at the beginning of August 1835 he set the task for the Abitur examination: "The union of believers with Christ according to Joh. 15,1-14, presented in its reason and essence, in its unconditional necessity and in its work" u. a. for Karl Marx. On August 17, 1835, he assessed Marx's essay: “A thoughtful, flourishing, powerful presentation that deserves praise, even if the nature of the association in question is not given, the reason for it is understood from one side only, and its necessity is poor is proven. Trier, August 17, 1835. Küpper ”. During the oral Abitur examination, Küpper Marx set the task from Joh. 13,33: “at which points the main doctrines of Christianity were explained and developed”, namely “Marx on the immortality of the soul”. Marx received the grade "Satisfactory". In the school leaving certificate, Küpper rated Marx: “Knowledge of religion. Knowledge of Christian doctrine and morals is fairly clear and well-founded; he also knows to some extent the history of the Christian Church. ”In August 1837 Heinrich Marx visited the Küpper family in Koblenz.
