Johann Christian Burgmann

Johann Christian Burgmann (born April 25, 1697 in Rostock ; † January 18, 1775 there ) was a German Lutheran theologian and university professor.

Life

Johann Christian Burgmann was born in 1697 as the son of the Rostock theologian Jacob Burgmann and his wife Katharina Margaretha, b. Beselin (1670-1731). He received private tuition and attended the Rostock city school . Burgmann studied from 1711 to 1718 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Rostock and then from October 1718 at the University of Jena and then at the University of Wittenberg . On October 9, 1719 he was awarded a Magister Liber in Rostock . artium and received at the faculty. From 1720 he worked as a private lecturer at the Philosophical Faculty and later also at the Theological Faculty. In January 1724 he was appointed pastor at the church of the Rostock Holy Spirit Hospital , the introduction to the office took place on February 19. On September 10, 1726, he received his doctorate theol at the Theological Faculty.

In 1730 he was appointed councilor professor of physics and metaphysics at the philosophy faculty as the successor to Zacharias Grape . Peter Christian Kämper (1702–1755) in turn succeeded him when Burgmann moved to the Faculty of Theology in 1735 and was appointed as the successor of Johann Joachim Weidner to the Council Professor of Theology (Secundarius). During his work at the university he was its rector in 1736, 1742, 1748, 1754 and 1760 and also librarian of the academic library from 1746 to 1750. In addition, from 1756 he was director and senior of the Ministry of Spirituality . Burgmann was together with Ernst Johann Friedrich Mantzel from 1737 to 1748 editor of the series Etwas von Gelehrten Rostockschen. For good friends .

Johann Christian Burgmann was married to Margarethe Ilsabe Dörcks († 1776), the daughter of Rostock councilor Christoph Daniel Dörcks, since August 31, 1730.

In 1758, Burgmann protested alongside Johann Heinrich Becker and Bernhard Friedrich Quistorp against the entry of Christian Albrecht Döderlein, who had been appointed professor of theology and consistorial councilor at the university by Duke Friedrich zu Mecklenburg . The dispute culminated in a dispute between the Rostock magistrate and the duke, which ended in 1760 with the establishment of the ducal University of Bützow and the change of the professors appointed by the duke to there.
