Johann Christian Pfister , later von Pfister (born March 11, 1772 in Pleidelsheim , † September 30, 1835 in Stuttgart ), was a German historian , Protestant clergyman and general superintendent of Tübingen .

Life

Pfister was the son of a bailiff in Pleidelsheim and the daughter of an innkeeper, Sofie Dorothea Schweizer from Ditzingen . His training for the clergy began in 1781 with a pastor Dörr in Höpfigheim . This was followed in 1786 by the lower evangelical-theological seminary at Denkendorf Monastery , and in 1788 at Maulbronn Monastery . In 1790 it went to the Tübingen monastery , where, among other things, he established close contact with Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling . In 1792 he graduated with a master's degree and then with the dissertation De originibus et principiis allegorica sacrarum literarum interpretatione for Dr. theol. PhD.

After four years as court master at a branch of the Barons von Kniestedt in Stuttgart, Pfister became a repetent for philosophy and history at the Tübingen monastery in 1800 . His historical interest led him to Vienna for a few months in 1803 , where, in addition to extensive archival research, he met and exchanged ideas with Johannes von Müller . After the vicariate from 1804 in Vaihingen an der Enz , he was there from 1806 as a deacon . In 1813 he was appointed pastor in Untertürkheim and finally in 1832 as prelate and general superintendent in Tübingen .

As general superintendent, Pfister was a member of the Württemberg estates from 1833 until his death . As early as 1811 he was a foreign, extraordinary member of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich , as well as a corresponding member of the Society for Germany's Older History . In 1822 Pfister became a member of the Association for the Wuerttemberg Patriotic Studies.

Pfister died in office in 1835 of a fever that was rampant in Stuttgart.

Political positions

In his political views, Pfister was considered to be moderate and an opponent of extreme positions. He stood up in the state estates for freedom of the press , for the lifting of censorship in the Kingdom of Württemberg and for an independent representation of the Protestant Church.
