Johann Ernst May

Johann Ernst May (* 1785 in East Prussia ; † November 24, 1861 in Danzig ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 6th Landwehr Brigade.

Life

His parents were the Prussian lieutenant a. D. Johann David May and his wife Marie, née Empacher.

Military career

May joined the Prussian Army's 23 fusilier battalion as a private corporal in 1800 and was promoted to second lieutenant by the end of November 1803 . In the Fourth Coalition War he took part in the battles at Schirmana, Weichselmünde and Walters, as well as in the unsuccessful relief of Danzig . May received a commendation for Braunsberg.

After the war, May came to the East Prussian Infantry Regiment on January 22nd, 1808 . In the campaign of 1812 he fought at Czibos, Lapinos and Grozno. On July 13, 1813 he was promoted to prime lieutenant. During the wars of liberation he fought in the sieges of Magdeburg, Wittenberg and Soissons . Near Leipzig he received the Order of St. Vladimir IV Class and a commendation from the Prussian side, and he was also in the battle in Düren. On May 31, 1814, he was promoted to staff captain.

After the war, May rose to captain and company commander in early April 1816 . On March 30, 1829 he came as a major and commander in the 2nd Battalion of the 19th Landwehr Regiment and from there on December 14, 1833 as a commander in the Fusilier Battalion of the 18th Infantry Regiment . In this position, promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1840 , May was initially commissioned to lead the 4th Infantry Regiment on March 25, 1841 , and was appointed regiment commander on January 13, 1842. On March 30, 1842 he was promoted to colonel with a patent from April 7, 1842 . From there he came on March 27, 1847 as a commander in the 6th Infantry Brigade and on April 3, 1847 was aggregated to the 4th Infantry Regiment . On May 10, 1848, he was promoted to major general before he was transferred to Torgau as a commander on May 5, 1849 , but on September 15, 1849 he was appointed commander of the 6th Landwehr Brigade. Under awarded the Red Eagle II. Class with oak May received on November 13, 1849 his parting with inn . He died in Danzig on November 24, 1861.
