Johann Friedrich Breyer

Johann Friedrich Breyer (born December 2, 1738 in Stuttgart , † June 28, 1826 in Erlangen ) was a German Protestant clergyman , philosopher and university professor .

Life

Breyer moved into the Tübingen monastery in 1756 and began studying theology , philosophy, mathematics and history at the University of Tübingen . In 1758 he obtained a master's degree in philosophy, then he completed his studies in theology with an exam. In 1761 he got a job as a preacher in the German community of Livorno . During this time he also acted as tutor for the children of the Prussian consul in Livorno. He stayed there until 1768. His return journey took him via Rome , Naples and Venice. Shortly before his murder, he met the archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann . He then traveled to Hamburg via Munich . There he got in touch with Gotthold Ephraim Lessing .

In 1769, Breyer accepted a call as a full professor of philosophy at the University of Erlangen , where in 1773 he became the elder of the Institute of Morals and the Fine Sciences. In 1776 he was also given the professorship of German literature and the fine sciences. He had, among other things, the Dean Office held at the Faculty of Arts and was 1771 to 1783 for Dr. phil. PhD . In 1782 he was given the title of a royal Brandenburg court counselor and later also became royal Bavarian Privy Councilor . His teaching is said to have been very popular, especially among foreign students, but in the last years of his life he was no longer able to give lectures.

Breyer was a nephew of the Württemberg secret councilor Johann Gottlieb Breyer .
