Johann Günther (media scientist)

Johann Günther (born August 17, 1949 in Rohrendorf near Krems , Austria ) is an Austrian marketing specialist and media scientist.

Life

After completing technical training, Johann Günther studied philosophy , newspaper studies and art history at the University of Vienna . This was followed by two terms in Cambridge and a doctorate in philosophy.

From 1974 to 1996 he worked in the industry as product manager for word processing ( Olivetti ), advertising manager for consumer goods ( Philips ), marketing manager for new media such as BTX , Teletex , word processing and personal computing, director for communications and data technology ( Kapsch AG ), Managing director of a research company in Frankfurt ( DATEX-Technische Entwicklungs GesmbH ) and an Austrian computer company ( Data 100 GesmbH ). He was involved in the development of the first portable computer, which was also produced in Austria. In 1976 he received the Austrian advertising industry award. Sales Director Austria in Telecommunications ( Alcatel Austria AG) and later Export Director of the Business Systems Group for Central and Eastern Europe and the Far East . Head of Latin America and Europe at the headquarters in Paris to return to Austria in 1994 as a member of the management team with sales responsibility for Austria and Eastern Europe.

From 1979 to 1996, in addition to the private sector, he was a lecturer at the University of Vienna, at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies with a focus on new communication technologies. Introduction of the screen text teaching editorial team at the University of Vienna. In 1995 he was an honorary professor at the State Telecommunications University in St. Petersburg. In 1996 he switched to the university area. Until 2004 he was head of the telecommunications, information and media department at Danube University Krems , where he was vice-president from June 1999 to January 2004. He was then appointed managing director of the Sankt Pölten University of Applied Sciences from 2004 to 2007 . Since April 2007 he has been the project manager for the Multidimensional Project for the Implementation of an Institutionalized Partnership between Austria and Kosovo in the Field of Higher Education, Research and Innovation for the European Integration Working Group (AEI) with an office in Pristina , Kosovo .

Member of the steering group for new media in teaching at universities and technical colleges in Austria and of the steering committee for information and communication technology of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture , the Digital Platform Austria , the radio and telecommunications regulatory authority , since 2003 board member of Austrian Computer Gesellschaft (OCG), board member of GlobArt , board member of the “Kuratorium Wirtschaftskompetenz Europa” in Berlin . 1999 to 2005 President of the European Association of Telematic Application (EATA), since 2004 finance member of the board. Board member of the Austro-Polish Society and since 2006 Vice President.

Johann Günther lectured for one semester at the University of Graz as a guest on the subject of "Presentation Technology"; at the invitation of Hermann Maurer .

In October 2010 Günther was appointed as the first rector of the University of Buraimi in Oman , with several Austrian universities - University of Vienna, Technical University of Vienna, University of Applied Sciences Vienna, IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems - being cooperation partners. In addition, the English University of Bradford.

Johann Günther has been married to Hannelore Günther since 1974, with whom he has two children and lives in Hinterbrühl .

Awards

Even before the political change and the dissolution of the communist planned economy , he began building up the Alcatel sales network in Eastern Europe. For this he received the Austrian export promotion recognition award in 1995 .

For his special services to the cooperation between Poland and Austria, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland (Krzyzem Kawalerskim Orderu Zaslugi Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej) by the Polish President Aleksander Kwaśniewski on October 21, 2004 .

On June 6, 2013 he was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .
