Johann Garleff

Johann Christian Garleff (born June 15, 1878 in Oldenburg in Holstein ; † May 3, 1976 in Bordesholm ) was a German architect and construction clerk .

Life

First, Garleff learned the carpentry trade in Oldenburg. In 1899 he passed an exam at the building trade school in Eckernförde . From 1902 to 1905 he then studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe with Carl Schäfer , Josef Durm and Friedrich Ratzel . He toured southern Germany to draw medieval brick architecture. He was interested in the younger style. His distinctive study drafts made reference to medieval building traditions.

In 1906 Garleff began working as a lecturer at the Ducal Building Trade School in Coburg . In 1908 he won a competition for the new building of the Sparkasse in Solingen and moved there in 1908 to take over the construction management. He set up a school at the same time. When he was elected district builder of Bordesholm in 1909 , he returned to Schleswig-Holstein .

In the following 23 years of his work from this point, many buildings were built in the former Bordesholm district , which are still considered architecturally successful today. Examples include the Rudolf Tonner School in Tungendorf , which is now under monument protection , the Brothers Grimm School in Kronshagen , the current elementary school built in 1912 with the unusual hall, which is now under monument protection, and the one in 1912 and 1913 based on his designs built district building in Bordesholm, which has been a listed building since 1976. When his construction work in the district ended in 1931, he devoted himself to private commissions. In 1939 Garleff designed the bench under the village linden tree. The interest in the "village" increased, and he traveled to Fehmarn in order to record farms that were found to be ideal.

In 1941 Garleff was again active in Bordesholm with the construction of an emergency settlement. At the age of 94 he finally finished his last building, a living room and inn, which was called "Zur Eule". Garleff spent the last part of his life traveling.

His buildings are often kept in the so-called homeland security architecture, which essentially uses local building materials such as brick, bricks and wood; the buildings are often designed with lattice windows and bay windows.

In Bordesholm, the Johann-Garleff-Weg was named after him.

Summarizing exhibitions of photographs and other documents of the buildings built according to his designs have been held several times. His professional estate is kept in the Schleswig-Holstein Archive for Architecture and Civil Engineering (AAI) in Schleswig.
