Johann Georg Rau

Johann Georg Rau (born April 22, 1809 in Waldmühlen ; † February 12, 1872 in Limburg an der Lahn ) was a Catholic clergyman and Nassau politician.

Life

Johann Georg Rau was born in Waldmühlen, Westerwald , into a farming family. After attending the Nassau state high school in Weilburg (1824-27), he studied Roman Catholic theology . In 1830 he was ordained a priest and he became a chaplain , first in Diez , then in Frickhofen (1831) and at the Bartholomäuskirche in Frankfurt . In 1834 he became dean in Hadamar , four years later he took over the parish and later also the dean's office in Weilburg. In 1844 he took over the parish of Lahr .

Johann Georg Rau became a member of the Nassau Estates Assembly in 1849 . He moved into parliament as the successor to Johann Bellinger . As a result of the revolution of 1848, the assembly of the estates consisted of only one chamber. Within parliament he was one of the spokesmen for the clerical-conservative “Club of the Right”. Rau was a member of the "German Association".

In 1851 Rau was appointed pastor of Dietkirchen . At the same time he received the office of cathedral capital . As a clergyman , he was one of the closest confidants of Limburg Bishop Peter Joseph Blum . In the elections in the following year, estates consisting of two chambers were again established. Rau was elected to the second chamber as a member of the Wallmerod constituency. During the Nassau church struggle , he and Moritz Lieber were among the leading representatives of the Catholic Church in the state estates. In the 1858 election, Rau was elected in Wallmerod, Hadamar and Limburg. He took over the mandate for Limburg, but resigned it again in 1859. His successor was the landowner Joseph Menges . In the 1864 election, Rau was re-elected for the Limburg constituency.

In the Reichstag election in February 1867 , Rau ran in the Reichstag electoral district Wiesbaden 1 , but had no chance to prevail against August Hergenhahn .

Rau died on February 12, 1872 in Limburg an der Lahn.
