Johann Gottlieb Wolstein

Johann Gottlieb Wolstein (also: Johann Friedrich Wolstein ; born March 14, 1738 in Flinsberg , Silesia ; † July 2, 1820 in Altona ) was a German physician. He is considered the founder of veterinary medicine in German-speaking countries.

Life

Wolstein studied surgery, obstetrics and medicine in Vienna from 1760 , attended a veterinary school in Paris from 1769 and deepened his knowledge by traveling to England, Holland, Denmark and Prussia. After receiving his doctorate in Jena in 1775 , he then returned to Vienna and, on the orders of Emperor Joseph II, designed the plan for an “ animal hospital ” (from which the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna later emerged), which he has headed since his appointment as professor in 1777. In 1794 he was arrested for his membership in a Masonic lodge and his support for the French Revolution and sentenced to two years imprisonment, but after five months he was released and expelled from the country. From 1795 he practiced in Altona and from 1797 also gave free lessons at the agricultural school founded by Lucas Andreas Staudinger in Flottbek. Since 1799 he was a member of the Patriotic Society , was elected to several academies and professional societies and in 1813 was honored with the Dannebrogden .

During the funeral of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock, Wolstein stood with Johann Daniel Lawaetz , Friedrich Johann Jacobsen and Masius Johann Feldmann as an honorary companion at the grave. In 1807 Wolstein was elected to one of 60 foreign members of the medical-surgical society in Paris. In 1806 Wolstein was appointed to the Schleswig-Holstein Medical College.

Johann Gottlieb Wolstein married Justine Catharina Eleonora Helmrich (1757 (?) - 1840) in 1789. She came from Celle.

Honors

In 1958 the Wolsteinkamp in Hamburg-Groß Flottbek was named after him.
