Carl Johann Grund (born May 19, 1808 in Vienna , † August 4, 1887 in Baden-Baden ) was an Austrian- German history , genre and portrait painter .

Life

From 1820 Johann Grund attended the elementary class at the Art Academy in Vienna , where he was enrolled in the history drawing class in 1827. From 1827 he went hiking through the Alpine countries and lived in Zurich for several years. The artist settled in Karlsruhe and became a citizen of Baden in 1831 , later he lived in Baden-Baden. He married the patrician daughter Anna Appenzeller from Zurich in Karlsruhe in 1832. From May 14, 1839 he was court painter at the court of Grand Duke Leopold von Baden .

He went on numerous study trips: Paris (1839 and more often), Munich , Vienna , Düsseldorf (1843), Rome (1842/43), Hungary (1844). Theodor Leopold Weller made a portrait of him in Rome in 1843, as did Grund von Weller.

Works by Johann Grund can be found in the collections of the museums in Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Vienna.
