Johann Heinrich Callenberg (born January 12, 1694 in Molschleben ; † July 16, 1760 in Halle (Saale) ) was an orientalist, publicist and theologian.

Life

After completing high school in Gotha, the farmer's son studied philology and theology in Halle from 1715. There he received an extraordinary, in 1735 a full professorship for oriental languages ​​and in 1739 a professorship for theology .

Due to his special interest in the Jewish and Mohammedan mission , he founded the Institutum Judaicum et Muhammedicum at the suggestion of Johann Andreas Hochstetter and initiated by August Hermann Francke in 1728 , which was merged with the Francke Foundations in 1792 . The foundation translated the Bible and edifying writings into oriental languages ​​and had these translations produced in-house. About 20 missionaries were trained and the first two missionaries, Johann Georg Widmann and Johann Andreas Manitius (1707–1758), were sent out in November 1730.

He was buried in Halle's Stadtgottesacker . His grave is in crypt arch 73, grave inscriptions are no longer preserved.
