Johann Jakob Schmauß
Johann Jakob Schmauß (born March 10, 1690 in Landau , † April 8, 1757 in Göttingen ; also Johann Jacob Schmauß ) was a German lawyer , historian and university professor .
Life
After attending grammar schools in Durlach and Stuttgart , Schmauß first studied in Strasbourg from 1707 and then at the University of Halle . There he was mainly influenced by the scholars Christian Thomasius and Nikolaus Hieronymus Gundling . In 1712 Schmauß completed his habilitation in Halle, which enabled him to give lectures in the field of history. At this time Schmauß began to publish publications regularly.
Without restricting his literary activities, he entered the service of the Margrave of Baden-Durlach in 1721 , first as Councilor, then in 1728 as Privy Councilor, and he also took over the official duties of the Bishop of Strasbourg in the Holy Roman Empire . On April 29, 1734, at the instigation of Gerlach Adolph von Münchhausen , Schmauß was given the professio historiarum et juris naturae et gentium in Göttingen . Münchhausen wanted to tie him to the University of Göttingen , which had just been founded, primarily because of his popularity in aristocratic circles and the lessons he enjoyed at Gundling . After Johann Peter von Ludewig's death (1743), Schmauß was appointed to the University of Halle as his successor. Due to a delay in his inauguration and lack of salary, he first turned to Leipzig , where he briefly taught at the university, but then returned to his position in Göttingen in 1744, where he remained until his death.
